Battlefield 6 has no chance of beating Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 if one specific leaked detail turns out to be true. The long-standing rivalry between the two franchises is set to be reignited later this year, but Battlefield 6 may have already put itself at a distinct disadvantage.
Despite Call of Duty and Battlefield being two very different types of shooters, fans have often pitted them and their success against one another. Where Call of Duty was all about the gunplay, Battlefield's large-scale blend of boots-on-the-ground and vehicular combat offered a more realistic combat experience. However, the struggles of previous release Battlefield 2042 and the lack of a new title in almost four years mean that Call of Duty has undeniably been the more relevant franchise of late, leaving Battlefield to fight an uphill battle from the start.

Battlefield 6’s Battle Royale mode was recently leaked, and if it wants to improve on past attempts, it needs to do these four things.
But if recent leaks are true that Battlefield 6 is skipping Xbox One and PlayStation 4, then its upcoming battle against Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 may already be lost. While most developers have already left the last-gen consoles behind, Call of Duty is one of the few series that has continued to release for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, a necessary choice due to its mass appeal. That doesn't mean Battlefield 6 can't be a massive success in its own right, but any hopes it has of competing against the sales numbers of another cross-generation Call of Duty game appear to be dead in the water.
Battlefield 6 Skipping Last-Gen Undoubtedly Limits Game Sales
Ultimately, it makes sense that Battlefield 6 is skipping last-gen hardware. The Battlefield series has often pushed the boundaries when it comes to graphical fidelity, and being hamstrung by 2013 hardware would massively hold it back in that regard. However, there's no doubt that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 still have a huge player base, and EA is leaving a lot of money on the table by abandoning those consoles. It certainly makes EA's ambitious plan to hit 100 million players in Battlefield 6 seem all the more unlikely.
EA has yet to confirm a Battlefield 6 release date, although the most significant rumor currently has the game pegged for an October 10 launch. This is to be taken with a pinch of salt, of course. Fans should keep an eye out for July 31, when EA is hosting Battlefield 6's multiplayer reveal. Perhaps this is when EA will also reveal the open beta dates for Battlefield 6, the existence of which was confirmed just a few days ago.
