The Battlefield franchise is in a pretty weird spot right now. The last entry in the series, Battlefield 2042, was nothing short of a disaster at launch, and it has never really made a full recovery since then. The next Battlefield installment, meanwhile, doesn't even have an official name yet, but footage of it has already been leaked online. Considering the poor state that Battlefield is currently in, it's safe to say that series developer DICE has its work cut out for it with Battlefield 6, or whatever the game ends up being called. Luckily, the franchise's next entry is looking pretty promising so far.
In the last few months, EA has been holding closed playtests for the next Battlefield game in North America and Europe. Although participants are technically not supposed to comment on their experience with the game, many have expressed positive opinions about it so far. Battlefield 6 seems to retain a lot of the features that made the earlier installments in the franchise so beloved, such as destructible environments, small-scale multiplayer matches, and a modern-day setting. Unfortunately, the game isn't going to be released anytime soon, but there are at least a couple of movies and shows related to it that fans may want to check out in the meantime.
One Simple Trick Could Give Battlefield 6 an Edge Over Call of Duty 2025
Battlefield 6 is promising to take Battlefield back to its roots, and that would be a perfect chance to make one winning gesture to the community.
Battlefield Fans Should Watch Civil War and Lioness in Preparation for BF6
Battlefield 6's Single-Player Campaign Was Inspired by War-Themed Films & TV Shows
During an interview with Inverse, some of the developers at EA Motive, the company that's working on the single-player campaign for Battlefield 6, shared a few details about their inspirations for the game. Roman Campos-Oriola, the creative director of the title, told Inverse that he was a big fan of a TV show called Lioness, which influenced Battlefield 6's narrative. Meanwhile, executive producer Philippe Ducharme said that the 2024 thriller film, Civil War, served as a reference for some of the "things that [EA Motive] is pushing" in Battlefield 6.
Lioness is an Espionage TV Show from the Creator of Yellowstone
Most gamers have probably never heard of Lioness or Civil War before, but that's not unexpected. Although they're among the most well-received movies/TV shows of the last few years, they haven't exactly set the world on fire. Lioness, for those who don't know, is a Paramount+-exclusive spy thriller TV series that was created by Taylor Sheridan, the producer behind Yellowstone. The show follows a CIA operative named Joe, who recruits a group of female operatives, known as Lionesses, to fight in the war on terror. Lioness first aired in July 2023 and is loosely based on a true story.
Civil War is a Political Thriller Movie That Was Written and Directed by Alex Garland
Although Civil War is also set during a war, hence its name, the film's plot is very different compared to Lioness's. Civil War is an action thriller film that focuses on a group of war journalists who go on a trip from New York City to Washington D.C. In order to interview the U.S. President during the midst of a civil war. This film was written and directed by Alex Garland, the esteemed writer who worked on the hit sci-fi movie Ex Machina, in addition to the Ninja Theory-developed video games Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and DmC: Devil May Cry. Civil War was produced by A24, and it was the company's most expensive film to date.
Battlefield 6's Campaign Will Focus on the Concept of Ordinary People in Extraordinary Situations
Some fans may be wondering what exactly Battlefield 6 has in common with Civil War and Lioness, given the lack of similarities between the three titles. According to Campos-Oriola, Civil War and Lioness both feature "the concept of talented but ordinary people in extraordinary situations," which is a plot element that EA Motive is "looking to capture" in Battlefield 6's single-player campaign. In Campos-Oriola's opinion, regular individuals being placed in unusual circumstances "creates a very interesting dynamic in terms of relationships with other people."
