DICE product owner and design director Shashank Uchil has claimed that Battlefield 6 fans' nostalgia for old maps has made them difficult to remaster. The Battlefield 6 developer's claim raises an interesting discussion about the remastered maps in the game.
Of all the confirmed Battlefield 6 maps so far, only one is a remaster: Operation Firestorm from BF3. It seems that early in the game's lifespan, Battlefield Studios' focus is on delivering new content to players, although one Battlefield 6 leak earlier this year indicated plans for Propanda, Talah Market, and Downtown to return from previous titles. Whether this comes to fruition remains to be seen, but the developer is evidently not averse to remasters altogether.

Battlefield 6 Dev Says 'You Wouldn't Believe How Difficult' Remastering Old Maps Is
Speaking to PCGamesN, DICE product owner and design director Shashank Uchil stated, "You wouldn't believe how difficult it is. Because [of players'] expectations. People know the map and people have certain expectations. But also there's rose-tinted glasses, like, this is how it used to be." The real difficulty in bringing more remasters to the list of Battlefield 6 maps is making sure they still actually work in the new sandbox, which has continued to evolve in each iteration of the series.
"That's where challenge comes in," claims Uchil. "How do we make it as destructible as every map in the package? How do we make sure the map works with the weapons, which are different from the weapons in Battlefield 3? It's much more complicated than people think."
DICE producer Jeremy Chubb was also present for the interview, taking a cautious line on the topic of Battlefield 6 map remasters. "It's a fine line, because people have really particular views about what that map was. They want that experience realized. But I think that we would disappoint people a little if we weren't able to evolve it and embrace the new ideas and features that we have in this game."
With less than a month to go until launch, Battlefield Studios is in the final stages of tuning Battlefield 6 from open beta feedback. Despite some prominent complaints about map size, the sentiment surrounding Battlefield 6's open beta was largely positive, so hopefully it can deliver on the obvious promise it showed when players got their hands on it last month.
