With chemical warfare being the main theme Battlefield 6 Season 2's first content drop, it's only natural that gas masks would get added back into the game. The VL-7 Smoke seen in certain game modes present a unique challenge: mask up, or suffer some seriously weird (and impressive) hallucinations. Without a gas mask, you'll start seeing false map pings and strange shadow silhouettes, and a whole lot of voices will start whispering in your ear too. Gas masks are fairly simple tools in BF6, but in case you're having trouble with using them, here's what you need to know.

Using Gas Masks in Battlefield 6
To equip a gas mask, simply press and hold X on keyboard or D-Pad Up on controller. Keep in mind that players only get access to gas masks in game modes where VL-7 gas is present (namely in the VL-7 Strike/Warfare LTM mode, or the Synthesis and Altered State RedSec modes).
Everyone can wear a gas mask in BF6; you don't need to use a character skin that actually has one on their model. However, make sure that you have filters in your inventory. There's a number above the gas mask icon in the lower part of your screen; this indicates how many filters you have left. Staying inside a VL-7 smoke cloud will deplete your current gas filter. If you run out, you can grab some more by standing near a Support Supply Box.
If your gas mask isn't working in Battlefield 6, then you are likely experiencing a bug. If this is the case with you, make sure you have gas mask filters, and if that doesn't solve anything, try remapping your controls.
VL-7 gas won't deal any damage. You can stay inside big clouds without worrying about your health draining away, but you'll still experience harsh hallucinations while you're under the effect of VL-7. Allies will appear as enemies, enemies will appear as allies, and all the other audiovisual hallucinations will make for a truly overwhelming experience.
Contaminated is the only multiplayer map in BF6 that features VL-7 gas. Most major objectives will be covered in the stuff, and since each gas mask filter doesn't last for more than a minute, you'll definitely want to stay close to your team's Support players.
Due to how gas clouds obscure the vision of players outside of them, you'll need to get up close and personal when playing VL-7 game modes. Assault rifles and carbines are particularly good in these modes, as they're effective in a wide variety of ranges.
