Summary

  • Rocksteady Studios is reportedly working on a new Batman game.
  • Sony is supposedly attempting to "moneyhat" the project, suggesting the title could be a PlayStation exclusive.
  • Rocksteady's return to a single-player Batman game follows the poor reception of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

An industry insider has revealed that developer Rocksteady Studios is now working on a new Batman game, with PlayStation currently in the process of attempting to back the project. The last Batman game to be developed by Rocksteady Studios was 2015's Batman: Arkham Knight, but the studio would then go on to develop its first non-Batman title since 2006 with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which was released earlier this year.

While there is a new Batman: Arkham VR game set to release in October, the Meta Quest 3 exclusive known as Batman: Arkham Shadow is not developed by Rocksteady Studios. Although Rocksteady did develop its own VR title in 2016 with Batman: Arkham VR, the studio has no involvement in Arkham Shadow. However, the VR title will still take place in Rocksteady's Arkham universe and act as a direct sequel to Batman: Arkham Origins, which was released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC in 2013.

Batman: Arkham Shadow is taking players back to the early days of the Caped Crusader's career, and that paves the way for one long-requested game.

After Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League received a largely poor reception from fans when it launched in February, Rocksteady is now reportedly going back to its roots and is working on a new Batman game. According to XboxEra co-founder Shpeshal_Nick, the new Batman game by Rocksteady Studios could supposedly be backed by PlayStation, as the insider says that Sony "are trying to moneyhat it." It's unclear what stage of the process the two studios are at, but Nick's tweet suggests that there's no deal currently in place.

PlayStation Attempting to Back New Rocksteady Batman Game

In response to Nick's tweet, one fan suggested that Rocksteady is likely working on a remaster for Batman: Arkham Origins as opposed to a new game, but the insider quickly shut down the suggestion and said he has heard the studio is working on a completely new game and not a remaster or remake. Given that Rocksteady is a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Games, all of the studio's previous Batman: Arkham games have been published by its parent company. If Rocksteady is working on a new Batman game, it will likely still be published by Warner Bros., but PlayStation's attempt to "moneyhat" the game suggests the studio wants to make the title a PlayStation exclusive.

Rocksteady returning to its roots with a single-player Batman game likely won't come as a surprise to many, as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's live-service elements are, ultimately, what led to its downfall. This also isn't the first time that rumblings of a new Batman game from Rocksteady have been heard. Back in June, Bloomberg reported that the studio had already pitched a new single-player game to Warner Bros. Following the aftermath of Kill the Justice League. If the rumors are to be believed, the project is likely still in the conceptual phase, so fans shouldn't expect any official news anytime soon.
