Fans have been waiting years to see the next Batman game, with many assuming it would be a continuation of the Arkham franchise. However, a new report suggests that instead of continuing the Arkham franchise, the new Batman game from WB Games Montreal is actually a "soft reboot" that is intended to launch a connected DC Game Universe.

This report comes from the website Geeks WorldWide, citing unnamed sources. According to the report, WB Games Montreal was originally going to announce a new Batman: Arkham game that would follow Damian Wayne, with the project set to be announced at The Game Awards 2016. However, the project was canceled, with the development team deciding to work on a reboot instead. The Batman reboot game will focus on the Court of Owls, have a playable Batfamily, and introduce co-op to the series.

If the report is to be believed, fans will get their hands on the new Batman game this fall. As previously mentioned, it's intended to start a connected DC Game Universe, with the second game planned to be Rocksteady's next-gen project. A next-gen Superman game is rumored to be in the pipeline after that, though the report stops short of mentioning who is developing it.

For DC Comics fans, all of this may sound like very exciting news. However, we must stress that fans should take this information with a grain of salt. GWW doesn't reveal its sources, and so it's possible that this information is made up. Alternatively, it's possible that plans have changed behind the scenes and WB Games Montreal's new Batman game has been redesigned or isn't still on track for a fall 2020 release.

However, considering the recent Batman teases from WB Games Montreal, it seems like a proper reveal is going to come sooner rather than later. There are no major video game events coming up until E3, but maybe the game will be revealed alongside the PlayStation 5. The PS5 reveal event is expected to take place either this month or in March, and a Batman game announcement would drum up even more buzz for Sony's new console.

Then again, a new Batman game announcement is significant enough that it doesn't necessarily need a big event; Warner Bros. Interactive could simply release a trailer for it online and create significant excitement. However the reveal is done, hopefully it happens soon so fans can stop relying on leaks and unverified information.
