Ball X Pit is the latest game published by Devolver Digital. After the fall of Ballbylon, society is forced to rebuild, and the only way to do it is by sending explorers down into the depths below. That’s the general premise, and it is a ball breaker game similar to classics like Arkanoid and Peggle, but with monsters subbing in for blocks.
10 Best Devolver Digital Games, Ranked
Devolver Digital has released numerous acclaimed games across several genres. Here are the best, ranked.
There are no grand story unlocks in between runs, as it’s also a roguelike, so players can just jump into Ball X Pit and have a good time. If anyone is feeling overwhelmed at the start, these tips are good ways to break through the first several hours.
Don’t Forget to Upgrade Buildings
One of the best ways to upgrade characters outside of a run is through the town-building mechanic. This is how players can unlock new characters and get passive buffs. It should be noted that the easiest way to build a structure is to place it in a convenient place for characters to bounce off, because that’s how things get created.
The border at the bottom of the screen is a good example. Rearranging buildings is free as well, so it’s good to keep that in mind whenever players feel too cluttered, especially the further they get. Finally, players may not realize they can upgrade buildings, which can increase stats and effects further, so that’s worth doing when they have amassed enough money and materials.
Turn Damage Numbers Off and Keep Autoplay On
There aren’t many options in the game, and certainly no assist functions to make it any easier as a roguelike. There are two things to keep in mind that will make gameplay smoother and look nicer while playing. First, players should directly go into the options and turn off damage numbers.
8 Games That Helped Popularize Roguelike Mechanics
These roguelikes can be thanked for helping certain now-trending mechanics and features become near-standard in the genre.
Seeing the numbers and knowing how much damage balls will do to enemies will honestly not help with anything. Players should concentrate on hitting enemies and not on how much they are damaging them, because they will eventually die regardless.
Slow Down Your Speed When Things Get Chaotic
Not every player may notice this, but there are three speeds to a run. Players will start slowly on the first setting, but they can increase the numbers by hitting the R1 button, using the PS5 controller as an example.
Most players will be able to play on full blast, but even the most skilled players will need to reduce the speed at some point. The third level, set in the desert, will find players facing a bunch of laser enemies. It will become a bit like a bullet hell shooter, but with the speed turned down, players can more easily dodge attacks like Neo dodging bullets in The Matrix.
Switch Between Characters
Players will start with The Warrior, who is a fairly good character with decent stats. The second character, The Achyfinger, is one of the better ones in the overall game as a gunslinger, so players should be able to beat most levels with him.
However, sticking with The Achyfinger, or any one character to level them up, would be a bad idea. That’s because characters who level up will unlock passive abilities that will benefit the whole party. The more players diversify themselves, the better. Some characters are easier than others, with The Shade being particularly tricky to use, but with practice, it will be worth putting time into all characters.
Balls and Passive Upgrades
The more levels players unlock, the more balls and passive abilities they can gain on runs. That said, the options players will start with are some of the best throughout the game. When choosing a ball, it’s best to start with some sort of status-based attacker.
For example, Poison will damage enemies over time, while an elemental ball like Burn will damage enemies with fire. For passive abilities, the Breastplate can reduce damage, and the Turret will give players extra baby balls to attack with. It might be worth testing out every single ball and passive ability to get acquainted with them and to figure out what combos best work with other balls and passive abilities.
Understand the Stats
Most of the stats in the game are easy to figure out, like Endurance, which can increase HP. There are some that are newer compared to other RPGs and roguelikes out there. Leadership is the biggest outlier, and it’s an important one.
This will determine how many baby balls get dropped during an attack. It should be obvious, but the more balls players have at play, the quicker enemies will be destroyed. For players who like using status effects with balls like Poison, they may want a higher Intelligence, so overall, players should read what stats do.
Catch Balls, Reset the Process
The biggest takeaway players should keep in mind is that Ball X Pit is not an idle game that plays itself. If players actively try to catch their balls, then they can release them faster instead of having them bounce around the bottom of the screen and wasting time.
There are even passive abilities that take advantage of ball catching, like Bottled Tornado. It’s important to take advantage of angles in the game. Aiming a ball in a closed crevice will cause it to bounce around more and thus do more damage to enemies. Also, it can be a dangerous strategy, but attacking a mini-boss up close and immediately catching balls after can kill them quickly. Just be ready to dodge attacks if they have any.
