Baldur’s Gate 3 was one of the most popular RPGs of the last decade, and will be getting a television series sequel at HBO, according to a new report from Deadline.
Craig Mazin will create, write, executive produce, and showrun the Balder’s Gate TV adaptation. Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, and Hasbro Entertainment’s Gabriel Marano will also executive produce. Chris Perkins, who formerly served as Head of Story at Hasbro subsidiary Wizards of the Coast, will serve as consultant.
Baldur's Gate 4 is Now Official, But Not The Way You Hoped
HBO and Craig Mazin are developing an adaptation of Baldur's Gate 3 that follows the immediate aftermath of The Absolute's attack on the city.
Craig Mazin to Continue the Baldur’s Gate 3 Story in HBO’s New Series
Mazin is the perfect person to create the Baldur’s Gate TV show. He has a demonstrated history of successful video game-to-screen adaptations as the co-creator of HBO’s The Last of Us. Being a huge gamer himself, Mazin understands how important it is for the essence of a video game to translate into a live-action production. While gameplay mechanics are a huge draw for many video games, compelling narrative design cannot be overlooked. That’s what’s been the key to successful game-to-TV adaptations — a good story. If you have a good story, people are going to love what you’re putting out there, no matter the medium.
7 Best Games to Play If You Like Baldur's Gate 3
These games will all appeal to BG3 fans with deep narratives, impactful choices, and expansive worlds. Expect to make some tough decisions.
However, the Baldur’s Gate TV series is going to differ in scope from Mazin’s previous project in a pretty huge way. While The Last of Us TV show retold the story from the PlayStation games, Baldur’s Gate will not be a retelling of the existing games. Instead, the Baldur’s Gate TV show is going to pick up right where the story left off at the end of Baldur’s Gate 3, continuing the story in a new format. The show will explore how the characters are dealing with the ramifications of what happened in Baldur’s Gate 3.
There’s a huge fanbase out there for Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate franchise. Baldur’s Gate 3 itself is definitely one of the best games ever developed, being the first game to win all five major Game of The Year awards. Baldur’s Gate is set in the same world as Dungeons & Dragons, arguably the best fantasy TTRPG ever created. Mazin himself is a big D&D fan. He plays the role of Dungeon Master, and has been playing the game weekly for the past 15 years. He’s also a fan of Baldur’s Gate 3, having completed the game on honor mode.
“After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created,” Mazin said. “I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.”
Baldur’s Gate TV Show: What We Know About Casting and Release
This isn’t the first time Wizards of the Coast has branched into screen adaptations. The D&D movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves released in 2023 to critical acclaim, with Rotten Tomatoes critics and audience scores at over 90% approval. There is also a Netlfix live-action Dungeons & Dragons series in the works. The Forgotten Realms, produced by Shawn Levy, will coexist with HBO’s Baldur’s Gate.
There is no news on casting for the Baldur’s Gate TV show yet, though Mazin does want to try to replicate bringing on voice actors from the game to participate in the show, like he did with The Last of Us. There is no release date information for the Baldur’s Gate TV show at this time.
