- Honour Mode offers high replay value in Baldur's Gate 3, challenging players with its highest difficulty level and limiting saves to one per campaign.
A Baldur's Gate 3 player managed to defeat Malus Thorm in less than a round in Honour Mode, using a party made up of Astarion, Shadowheart, Minthara, and the Dark Urge. While Baldur's Gate 3 is beloved for its approach to combat encounters and branching storylines, Honour Mode is arguably one of its biggest examples of replay value: it is the highest difficulty available to players, allows for only one save file per campaign, and completely buffs the game's boss fights via Legendary Actions.
Many fans have attempted to test their knowledge of the game by completing Honour Mode in Baldur's Gate 3, and even those who mastered the difficulty often think up new ways to do a different playthrough. Whether by doing a lone wolf run, or limiting the use of potions and spells, Honour Mode is designed to challenge the player, and Baldur's Gate 3 even allows them to create their own difficulty by setting custom rules.
Baldur's Gate 3 Mod Makes the Game Even Harder
A player creates a new Baldur's Gate 3 mod that makes the game's difficulty even harder by adjusting enemy stats and introducing new mechanics.
However, in the case of LeetMultisport, their feat of strength against Malus Thorm was achieved during a regular Honour Mode run. Malus is an undead surgeon that players encounter in the House of Healing during Act 2, and while players can skip the Malus Thorm boss fight in Baldur's Gate 3 via a string of successful dialogue checks, the actual fight can be downright terrifying even on lower difficulties. The party composition of LeetMultisport was made up of a lightning Sorcerer/Cleric, a Cleric/Fighter, an Oathbreaker/Warlock, and a Gloomstalker/Assassin.
Baldur's Gate 3 Player Defeats Malus Thorn in Honour Mode in a Single Round
Malus Thorm has 358 HP in Honour Mode, and melting it down to zero in less than a round is no small feat. It was accomplished by starting the fight off with Astarion, taking advantage of the Surprise effect, to land an Arrow of Many Targets coated in Arsonist's Oil, and then following it up with another Arrow of Many Targets coated in Combustion Oil. Using Dread Ambusher, a passive ability unique to Gloom Stalkers in Baldur's Gate 3, Astarion landed two more Fire Arrows.
Shadowheart was next in line, who applied the Wet debuff to Malus Thorm and his allies while invisible, thus making the targets vulnerable to lightning damage. The Dark Urge, as a Sorcerer, used Quicken to critically hit the majority of them with a Lightning Bolt. Minthara's turn was spent by throwing a Hunger of Hadar at the group, and releasing a Fire Arrow immediately after. Lastly, the Dark Urge finished the fight with Magic Missiles, a staple spell in Baldur's Gate 3 (and the tabletop game itself).
While the roll of the dice affects the outcome of combat in a major way, the key to success in Honour Mode is by preparing ahead of time, and approaching encounters with sound strategy. By defeating Malus Thorm in such a fashion, LeetMultisport certainly displayed how important both factors can be.
