Nintendo has finally revealed the details of its latest console, the Nintendo Switch 2. It has some great features, such as co-op, magnetically attached Joy-Con 2 controllers with mouse controls, a GameCube NSO game library, a bigger screen, and a library of games available to purchase at launch. Many of the Switch 2's features are designed to make playing games with others easier, and many of the games exclusive to the Switch 2 are either designed to be played co-op with friends or have the option of playing co-op.
Baldur's Gate 3 has received praise for its co-op mode. Much of Baldur's Gate 3's gameplay involves player agency, and this translates to a group gameplay experience that is very close to playing a TTRPG such as Dungeons and Dragons. This makes it a natural fit for the Switch 2, which has prioritized co-op features and ease of use in its design and features. With the Switch 2's launch library including games from third-party developers, Baldur's Gate 3 joining its library of games isn't so far-fetched, and its co-op mode would integrate seamlessly with the Switch 2.
How Baldur's Gate 3 Puts Even More Power in the Hands of Spellcasters
Baldur’s Gate 3 makes spellcasters stronger than ever, thanks to long rests that let players unleash powerful spells constantly.
Baldur's Gate 3's Multiplayer Would Be Perfect for the Switch 2
The Genius of Baldur's Gate 3's Co-Op
One of the most popular features of Baldur's Gate 3 is its co-op. Baldur's Gate 3's massive world and seemingly limitless potential for player choice have given players the closest experience to playing a collaborative TTRPG in a video game. Since Baldur's Gate 3's launch, players have been unleashing chaos on the Sword Coast alongside their friends, as players are free to make their own decisions independent of the party and motivated by their character's personality. This kind of gameplay often results in more entertaining gameplay than single-player playthroughs, and is a great way to introduce others to the joys of an RPG's party gameplay.
With Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 8 release, which will implement cross-platform multiplayer, Baldur's Gate 3's co-op will become even more accessible. A Baldur's Gate 3 Switch 2 release would make playing together in-person more feasible, while features such as GameChat will make communication when playing apart easier.
Adapting Baldur's Gate 3's Co-Op For the Switch 2
The Switch 2 has been streamlined to make playing with friends as accessible as possible, and makes Baldur's Gate 3 the perfect game for the console. Games like Mario Kart World and Split Fiction will be available on the Switch 2 at launch. Baldur's Gate 3 players in the same co-op party would be able to easily communicate thanks to the Switch 2's new GameChat feature.
Nintendo's GameChat feature will require a Nintendo Switch Online membership, but will have an open-access period from launch until March 2026.
Problems with a Switch 2 Release
Baldur's Gate 3 may encounter barriers to being a Switch 2 release, such as its size and graphics intensity. Baldur's Gate 3 is also a third-party game. However, there are several games in the Switch 2's launch library that are third-party games, which should make a port to the Switch 2 easier. One of the games that is getting a Switch 2 port on the console's release is Cyberpunk 2077, which is far more graphically intense than Baldur's Gate 3, so there shouldn't be a barrier to getting it on the Switch 2. Overall, Baldur's Gate 3 would be a natural addition to the Switch 2's game library.
