A talented modder has expanded Baldur's Gate 3's character customization with 54 new racial options to choose from. The mod is named Fantastical Multiverse 1.0, developed by DungeonsAndSouls. It expands Baldur's Gate 3's current race options with new choices from Dungeons and Dragons' Eberron and Grim Hollow settings, as well as Final Fantasy 14. For Baldur's Gate 3 players looking to spice up a second or third playthrough, Fantastical Multiverse seems like a great option.
The reception to Baldur's Gate 3's release on PC has been exceptional. The RPG is vast and has incredible depth. Just one playthrough can go over 75 hours, but Larian Studios has said it will take multiple campaigns to experience all of Baldur's Gate 3's various storylines. Part of that is because the story can vary dramatically depending on character creation. Dialogue options and interactions will change depending on whether a player is a Half-orc or a half-elf, a Gnome or a Dragonborn, or any other race. But, as a result, there were only so many races Larian could add to the RPG.
Where Larian was faced with limitations, modders are able to expand Baldur's Gate 3 in exciting ways. Modder DungeonsAndSouls has released their Fantastical Multiverse 1.0 mod, which expands Baldur's Gate 3's racial options with 54 alternatives. That includes 37 races based on official Dungeons and Dragons source material, 5 from the Grim Hollow setting, 8 homebrew races, and a bonus 4 from Final Fantasy 14 just for fun.
Some examples of races that the Fantastical Multiverse mod adds to Baldur's Gate 3 include monsters like the Bugbear, Changeling, Firbolg, and Minotaur. There are also revised standard races from Dungeons and Dragons' Unearthed Arcana, including Elf, Tiefling, Dwarf, Gnome, and Dragonborn, with several featuring multiple new subraces. Races found within Mordenkainen's Monsters of the Multiverse are also included, like the elemental Genasi, planetouched Aasimar, tribal Goliaths, and more.
As for the Final Fantasy 14 races, there are four currently implemented in the mod. Hyur, Elezen, Roegadyn, and Garlean are currently available to choose in the Fantastical Multiverse mod. DungeonsAndSouls does say they plan to implement more of Final Fantasy 14's races in the future. They were adapted for Baldur's Gate 3 by the modder themself.
While each race from the mod is uniquely designed to have its own Baldur's Gate 3 gameplay standards, that doesn't mean they will be seamlessly implemented throughout the game. Exactly how NPCs will react to a player's modded race isn't clear, but the mod makes no mention of custom responses or actions. Regardless, for Baldur's Gate 3 players interested in a more customized character creation experience, Fantastical Multiverse is an option worth checking out.
Baldur's Gate 3 is available now on PC and arrives on PS5 on September 6, followed by an Xbox Series X/S later this year.
