How to Get Sentinel Shield in Baldur's Gate 3

To get your hands on the Sentinel Shield, you will need to reach Act 2 of Baldur's Gate 3, meaning you will first need to progress through Act 1 in its entirety, completing all necessary quests and visiting important areas such as Emerald Grove, the Goblin Camp, and the Underdark - just to name a few.

Once you have reached Act 2, you will need to journey to Moonrise Towers either with assistance from Kansif and Kar'niss the Drider or through your exploration. After arriving at Moonrise Towers, you will need to locate the Bugbear merchant known as Lann Tarv, who can be found at the approximate coordinates of X: -163, Y: -167.

Now that you've made your way over to Moonrise Towers and located Lann Tarv, there are three options to consider when it comes to obtaining the Sentinel Shield:

  1. You can speak to him, ask to see his wares, and purchase the Sentinel Shield for 2,054 Gold.
  2. You can attempt to use a stealthy, DEX-based character, such as a Rogue or Ranger to Hide and pickpocket the item.
  3. You can attack Lann Tarv and kill him, as this is one of the lootable items found on his corpse upon death.

You'll need to note the following details if you choose to go for any of the non-purchase options:

  • The pickpocketing route may be hard to achieve, as Moonrise Towers is so full of other individuals who are likely to catch you in the act. While it is not impossible to pull off, you will likely need to do quite a bit of save scumming to eventually get this one right.
  • If you choose the combat route, then you will need to be prepared for a bigger fight than just Lann Tarv, as all Moonrise Towers residents within the area will join the combat against you. For this reason, it's best to ensure you have your Spell Slots prepared, your team healed up, and all party members present. Alternatively, you can wait until the end of Act 2 to obtain this item by completing the other objectives and waiting to defeat Lann Tarv in the big battle against Z'rell, before taking on Kethetic Thorm.

The Sentinel Shield is a huge addition to character builds wielding one-handed weapons, especially characters with a reasonably strong DEX. The reason for this is that while rolling Initiative for combat, every character rolls 1d4 and adds their Dexterity modifier. In addition to this, the Sentinel Shield's Heightened Awareness will add an extra +3 to this score, meaning you will likely always be able to go first in combat, minus the occasional iffy roll.
