The Risky Ring is a rare ring in Baldur's Gate 3 with one of the most powerful effects in the entire game. To balance this, it also comes with a glaring downside that makes it unsuitable for most characters to wear, at least during the early parts of the game.
Players hoping to use the Risky Ring will want to know where to find this item, its effects, and the best classes to get the most out of it. Here's the breakdown.
Baldur's Gate 3: 15 Best Rings You Can Get In Act 1, Ranked
Enchanted rings in Baldur's Gate 3 can provide players with handy perks, and there are plenty to pick up, even in Act 1.
How to Get the Risky Ring in Baldur's Gate 3
The Risky Ring can be purchased from Araj Oblodra in Baldur's Gate 3. She can be found in two locations:
- Moonrise Towers (Act 2): An alchemical workshop in the eastern section of the Moonrise Towers main floor, next to the throne room.
- Crimson Draughts (Act 3): An Apothecary located east of the Blushing Maid in the Lower City. Araj Oblodra will be here if she wasn’t killed in Act 2.
If killed, Araj Oblodra will not drop the Risky Ring.
If Astarion is convinced to bite Araj Oblodra, she will give the party a Potion of Everlasting Vigor (permanent +2 bonus to Strength).
Is the Risky Ring Worth Using in Baldur's Gate 3
Yes, it is, but only in certain situations. The way the Risky Ring works is simple. If a character is wearing it, they gain Advantage on all Attack Rolls, which means when it comes time to calculate damage from an Attack, the game rolls two dice (instead of one) and takes the higher result. On the flip side, whenever a character wearing the Risky Ring has to make a Saving Throw, they're at a Disadvantage, which means the game rolls two dice and takes the worse result.
Baldur's Gate 3: Best Items To Get From Araj Oblodra
Araj Oblodra is more than just a drow merchant in Baldur's Gate 3. Here is every important item you can get from her inventory.
The Risky Ring is best used on backline glass cannons who have ways of avoiding enemy detection and protecting themselves during battle. Rogues, in particular, get a lot of value out of the Risky Ring because they can weave in and out of enemy vision thanks to their toolkit. Best of all, the Risky Ring also works with Sneak Attack, dealing bonus damage. The Thief Subclass gains additional bonus actions, which are exceptional for allowing the Rogue to use Cunning Action: Hide and Disengage liberally to escape enemy detection range after dealing damage. It's also possible to multiclass into Fighter to gain Action Surge to make this strategy even more effective.
If you have Advantage on a Saving Throw and you're wearing the Risky Ring, the Advantage and Disadvantage from the two sources will cancel each other out.
Frontline characters typically do not want to wear a Risky Ring because they are often the very first to be targeted by enemy units, making any weakness exploitable. However, at later levels, players will be able to mitigate the negative effects of the Risky Ring via powerful enchanted gear pieces. Items like Shar's Spear of Evening, Shadeclinger Armor, Orphic Hammer, Armor of Moonbasking, and many others can accomplish this.
One of the best gear pieces in Baldur's Gate 3 to pair with the Risky Ring is The Deathstalker Mantle, which grants invisibility after you kill an enemy, once per turn. The Deathstalker Mantle is only available in The Dark Urge runs.
