How to Get Halberd of Vigilance

In Baldur’s Gate 3, the Halberd of Vigilance becomes available in Act 2. To obtain this item, you will need to have progressed through the initial section of the Shadow-Cursed Lands, and make your way to Moonrise Towers. In case you need help locating this structure, refer to the map screenshot below.

The Halberd of Vigilance is held by one of the many Cultists of the Absolute that can be found at Moonrise Towers, a Bugbear merchant by the name of Lann Tarv. When it comes to obtaining the Halberd of Vigilance from Lann Tarv, there are two ways to do so.

Method 1: Buy From Lann Tarv

To secure this item as soon as possible, you will need to explore Moonrise Towers and find Z'rell. As you speak to her, you will need to maintain your cover as a True Soul and convince her that you are an ally. By selecting the right dialogue options, Z'rell will put her trust in you, taking you on the Find Balthazar quest.

Before this interaction takes place, Lann Tarv will not have have the Halberd of Vigilance available to browse in his wares. However, earning Z'rell's trust will update the goods that he supplies, putting this powerful item in stock. You will now have the option to purchase the Halberd of Vigilance directly from Lann Tarv for 2496 Gold.

Method 2: Gauntlet of Shar

If you cannot afford Lann Tarv's price, you can earn the Halberd of Vigilance after completing the Gauntlet of Shar and rescuing the Nightsong. As you attack Moonrise Towers with Dame Aylen, Jaheira, and the Harpers, Lann Tarv will be one of the many enemies that you face inside. Upon defeating him, the Halberd of Vigilance is one of the select few items that can be looted from his corpse.

Halberd of Vigilance Skills & Buffs

Sentinel Weapon: Gain a +1 bonus to initiative rolls and Advantage on Perception Ability Checks.
Adroit Reflexes: When you make an Attack Roll as a reaction, you make it with an Advantage.

In Baldur's Gate 3, the Halberd of Vigilance is among the best weapons available for Paladin and Fighter builds. This weapon offers huge synergy with the Sentinel Feat, which is a popular choice for these two Base Classes. Sentinel allows a character to use their reaction to make a melee weapon attack against a target within 5 feet, when they attack a nearby ally. With the Sentinel Feat, the Halberd of Vigilance's Adroit Reflexes skill will be triggered every time you make a Sentinel Attack, enabling you to roll with Advantage. This means you will almost always be hitting the strikes that Sentinel allows you to make.

The Halberd of Vigilance is a two-handed STR-based weapon, so knowing which Classes are most suited to this is very important. As mentioned above, Paladin or Fighter are both excellent choices. However, you may also be able to work it into a worthwhile Barbarian build, though the Sentinel Feat is usually less popular with this choice.

Lastly, by ensuring your STR stat is as high as possible, you will maximize your damage output with the Halberd of Vigilance. Ways to maximize your Strength and establish synergy with a build of this type include:

Ensure your character has a starter STR stat of 17 (+2 Bonus).
Obtain Auntie Ethel's Hair to increase STR further +1.
At level 4, select the Ability Improvement Feat and increase STR further by +2, bringing it to a maximum of 20.
At level 8, take the Sentinel Feat to ensure synergy between your character and the weapon.
Later in the game, obtain the Gauntlets of Hill Giant Strength. This will bypass the max STR cap of 20, and instead make it 22.

By following these steps, you will create maximum synergy with the Halberd of Vigilance, ensuring that you both have the most opportunities to trigger the ability associated with this weapon, and deliver maximum damage output.
