Baldur's Gate 3: 7 Ways To Improve Dexterity

For those wondering how to improve their Dexterity ability score in Baldur's Gate 3, here are some of the best ways to do so.

How to Get Gloves of Dexterity in Baldur's Gate 3

Gloves of Dexterity can be purchased from a Githyanki trader named A'jak'nir Jeera in the Mountain Pass in Act 1 of Baldur's Gate 3. Creche Y'llek can be entered either through the main gate of the Rosymorn Monastery by navigating around the locked door, or through the hidden passage that requires climbing down the rocky mountain path south of the Monastery gates.

A'jak'nir Jeera is found on the southeastern part of Creche Y'llek, in the tunnel directly south of the Waypoint. If you enter through the hidden passage, she will be among the first Githyanki you encounter.

If killed, A'jak'nir Jeera does not drop the Gloves of Dexterity; make sure to purchase them from her before doing anything that would make all Githyanki in the area hostile. If the Zaith'isk treatment for Lae'zel goes badly, only the Githyanki in the immediate vicinity will become hostile. This does not prevent A'jak'nir Jeera from trading with you.

Are Gloves of Dexterity Worth Using in Baldur's Gate 3?

Gloves of Dexterity description Baldur's Gate 3

Yes, they are. In fact, the Gloves of Dexterity are one of the most useful items players can get in Act 1 of Baldur's Gate 3, though maybe not for characters that you might initially expect. Despite the name, the Gloves of Dexterity are not meant to be worn by Dexterity-scaling characters. This is because DEX-focused builds require that players increase this stat as much as humanly possible.

The Gloves of Dexterity set your Dexterity to 18, with "set" being the operative term. If a character's Dexterity is more than 18 without the gloves on, wearing them will have no effect, but if they have less than 18 DEX, no matter how low, wearing the gloves will increase it to 18. For characters who want as much DEX as possible, it's only useful during the super early game when their DEX is below this level. Once they are able to increase it past that point via level-ups, the item loses its allure.

However, that does not mean it becomes useless in the later stages of the game. On the contrary, Gloves of Dexterity remain one of the best items in BG3 for non-DEX scaling characters for two main reasons. Firstly, Dexterity is tied directly to Armor Class in Baldur's Gate 3; the higher your DEX, the higher your AC. At 18 Dexterity, characters gain +4 AC by default. However, how much of the +4 AC bonus you gain depends on what armor type they're wearing. Clothing and Light Armor allow the full Dexterity modifier bonus of +4 to take effect, Medium Armor limits Dexterity modifier to +2, and Heavy Armor ignores it entirely. Classes like Wizard and Cleric that wear Clothing and Light Armor get the most out of this aspect of the Gloves of Dexterity, whereas classes that like to wear Heavy Armor receive no benefit.

The second reason the Gloves of Dexterity are so coveted is because of how Dexterity is tied to Initiative in Baldur's Gate 3. The higher your DEX, the earlier your turn to act arrives, and considering how impactful a single turn can be in this game, this can be a game-changer, especially for slow classes like Paladin.

It's important to note that since the Gloves of Dexterity automatically set your DEX to 18, it doesn't matter how low the initial value is. In fact, the lower the better. Because of this, the best way to use these gloves is to respec your character's stats and dump the DEX stat on the character who is going to wear them, and use the extra points to increase other stats.
