Character customization is a massive appeal for Baldur's Gate 3 players, with the option to build a custom Tav from various Classes, Races, faces, outfits/armors, piercings, makeup, and tattoos. However, while there is an excellent range of options to choose from, players who have continued to do multiple runs of the game may find themselves growing tired of the same catalog, particularly when it comes to the likes of tattoos.

Luckily, mods enable players to edit their game with additional content, including extra customization options. As of Patch 8, modding for Baldur's Gate 3 has never been easier thanks to the in-game mod manager, which has seen a series of fun new mod additions the latest patch was released. This makes modding effortless for those previously unfamiliar with the process or who may be playing on console, and is as easy as a few in-game clicks. If you're wondering how you can use mods to your advantage to change the types of tattoos available for Tav's customization in Baldur's Gate 3, this guide explains all the relevant information on how to do so.

How to Get Different Character Tattoos in Baldur's Gate 3

In Baldur's Gate 3, the easiest way to get different character tattoos is by utilizing mods within the in-game mod manager. This mod manager can be accessed directly from the main menu of the Baldur's Gate 3 home screen and will lead players to a catalog that they can browse by category or type to search for specific mod types. Upon searching 'Tattoo,' a few different options will pop up, most notably the various packs known as the Lemon Tattoo replacer packs.

Players can browse these packs and choose the set of tattoos that they enjoy the most, and then simply hit the download button to install the mod. On their next playthrough, when it comes to Tav creation, they will then find that the default tattoos have been replaced by the options illustrated in the pack that they selected.

However, it is important to note that the in-game mod manager variants of the lemon tattoos are tattoo replacers, not additions - meaning that they will not add additional tattoos, but instead replace all default tattoos with different patterns/designs. This is simply due to restrictions on how the in-game mod manager works, as well as restrictions on console mods. Therefore, if players are looking to change up their tattoos but are limited to the console version of the game or do not wish to expand to external mods and downloads on PC, these are the best and, for the most part, only options to consider.

Alternatively, suppose players are familiar with, or are willing to learn how to use, the external mod manager known as BG3 Mod Manager (BG3MM). In that case, there are a few more options available to them. Most importantly, they will be able to head over to Nexus Mods and download more tattoo mods than are available in the in-game mod manager, as well as download tattoo additions rather than replacers. Most significantly, the Lemon Makeup and Tattoo Non-Replacer mod is the best bet, as it offers a collection of the Lemon tattoos and makeup designs as seen in the in-game mod manager packs.

By downloading and installing through BG3MM, players have the freedom to choose from a much larger selection of tattoos and makeup for character customization, which pairs nicely with the various custom face and hair mods that have been released thus far. Detailed instructions on how this mod works and where to place it in the BG3MM load order can be found on the mod's description page. Lastly, it is worth noting that BG3MM and the in-game mod manager do not interfere with each other, allowing players to use both without limitation, as long as the installed mods do not conflict with one another.
