There are plenty of classes to choose from in Baldur's Gate 3, but with the Multiclassing feature, the number of potential builds players can choose to make rises significantly. You can mix and match any of the available character classes, and if you're clever enough with your decisions, you can end up with an overpowered character who can curb stomp even the toughest of enemies.

Multiclassing can be intimidating at first, especially for new BG3 players. It isn't mandatory by any stretch of the imagination, but dabbling with it can lead to some very fun and overpowered class combos that can make your campaign a lot more enjoyable.

How to Multiclass in BG3

BG3 Wyll Multiclass screen

You can Multiclass your character as soon as you level up. On the level up screen, there's a small "Add Class" button in the left window under the Level Up tab. Press that button, and you'll be able to select your second class.

Keep in mind that you can only level up one class at a time. Every time you level up, you get to choose which of your classes is going to receive an upgrade.

You can respec your character by visiting Withers in your camp. Yes, you can also Multiclass by doing this instead of waiting for your next level up.

What Happens When You Multiclass?

BG3 Ranger Assassin Astarion Multiclass

When you Multiclass, you'll be able to enjoy the benefits of the classes you chose, from Proficiency bonuses to Class Actions, Abilities, and so on. You get to keep all the features of your initial class from before you Multiclassed, and you'll add whatever features your second class has on top of your first one.

This can lead to some amazing synergies between class-specific attacks, spells, and other abilities. For example, if you're playing as a Barbarian, you can Multiclass into Fighter to get Action Surge, vastly improving your Action economy and enabling more attacks per turn. Or, you can combine Hexblade with Shadow Magic Sorcerer to create a spell-slinging, Charisma-based class that's also good at melee combat.

Should You Multiclass in BG3?

This is entirely up to player preference. You can absolutely complete the entire BG3 campaign as just one, pure class. If you feel like your build could benefit from the features of a different class, you can get those benefits by Multiclassing.

Some of the strongest builds in Baldur's Gate 3 are made using a combination of two different classes. However, figuring out what classes to use requires deep knowledge of the game and its systems. Multiclassing generally isn't recommended for first-time players unless they're willing to follow build guides for hybrid classes.

You cannot Multiclass if you're playing on Explorer difficulty. You can, however, change the difficulty to Balanced, Multiclass your character, then go back to Explorer.
