Baldur's Gate 3 is the game many CRPG fans have waited years for. Players can expect to use a deep well of mechanics lifted straight from the tabletop RPGs that it's based on. This means you can interact with the environment and party members in ways you might not expect.

Using every available tool is important when fighting enemies or exploring the environment, and you can even tell companions to wait in place if you're planning something like sneaking behind an enemy for a surprise attack. There are multiple ways to order your party to do so in Baldur's Gate 3.

How to Split From the Party

If you want to separate one character from the party, you must "split" them away. On the PC version, you need to right-click on a character in the party on the left side of the screen. Then press "ungroup" to get them away from the rest. On the PS5 and Xbox versions, you must press L2/LT to access the party. Then hit the Triangle/Y button to split the character off. This will put the character at the bottom of the party roster with their portrait separated from the others. Switch to this character, and you can freely move them separate from the party. Use this to set up ambushes during battles, disarm trap-laden areas, or sneak around while stealing valuable items.

How to Group Characters Together

You can even group two or three characters together if you want to travel as a duo/trio. On PC, you should ungroup a character, and then switch to a character that is still grouped. Ungroup another to whittle the party down to two. As long as the character portraits are touching, they will stay together while traversing the environment.

On the PS5 and Xbox versions, you must press L2/LT just like before to access the party. Then select the characters you want to group up by pressing the Square/X button on them. This will put a white pairing symbol on their character portrait and make them touch. These characters will now be grouped to move together. This can come in handy by grouping melee or ranged fighters together and situating them in advantageous positions before a battle.

How to Regroup Companions

If you want to gather your party back together, you can. On the PC, move the stray character back near the party then press G to group them back up. On the PS5 and Xbox versions, you need to hold the Square/X button to Group All and reset the party. Manage your party to effectively handle any situation in Baldur's Gate 3.
