In Baldur's Gate 3, there is a wide variety of different items that you can use to customize and enhance character builds, such as weapons, armor, gloves, and boots. Each of these items not only enables you to customize visuals of your character through clothing choice and dyes, but many also offer buffs, perks, or even the ability to cast Spells.

Among these items is Reasons Grasp, a set of gloves that can seriously enhance a Barbarian build for your playthrough. This is very handy if you're playing a Barbarian Tav or have Karlach in your active party, as this item will synergize with the Rage mechanic to grant Temp HP. As every point of HP matters in combat, this Temp HP can go a long way, enabling improved survivability. However, to obtain Reason's Grasp, players will need to work their way through a couple of combats and complete a side quest, so knowing where to locate these events is key.

Where to Find Reason's Grasp in Baldur's Gate 3

Most importantly, Reason's Grasp can only be obtained in Baldur's Gate 3 during Act 1, so you'll need to ensure that you don't progress past the point of no return, as this will cause you to lose all access to this item for the rest of your playthrough. To locate Reason's Grasp in Baldur's Gate 3, you will first need to work your way through a couple of combats involving Gnolls and complete the Find the Missing Shipment quest. To locate these combats, head North from Blighted Village, jump across the gap in the bridge and turn right onto Risen Road. You will now come across a combat against several Bloated Hyenas and Gnolls.

After defeating these creatures, head up the first hill on the left to where combat took place, and continue following the path up the mountain. For an exact location, feel free to refer to the map screenshot below, which identifies the location in which you will face off against the second Gnoll Pack, and complete the Find the Missing Shipment Quest.

Now that you've located the Gnoll pack, combat should automatically trigger as soon as you stumble into their territory or are noticed by any of the pack members. This combat can be tricky if you come unprepared, but there are a few techniques that you can use to give yourself an upper hand and make your time much easier.

The first thing you can do to give yourself a huge buff in this fight is utilize the Hunting Shortbow. This is a ranged weapon that can be acquired from Dammon in Emerald Grove, so you can pick this one up before heading out to obtain Reason's Grasp. The reason that this weapon is such a benefit in this combat, is due to the fact that it automatically grants Advantage against Monstrosity-type creatures - which Gnolls just so happen to be. In addition to this, the Hunting Shortbow will let you cast Hunter's Mark as a Bonus Action. This bow works well with any character, but if you're looking to pack a serious punch, then equipping it to Astarion for this combat can be hugely beneficial, as it will automatically grant Advantage, meaning he can hit Ranged Sneak Attack every single turn.

The second thing that you can do to gain an upper hand in this combat, is to position one or more characters around the Gnoll Leader, Fiind. She will eventually approach your character and identify herself as a True Soul - though she is desperately tearing her mind in two with bloodlust and hunger, due to her Gnoll instincts fighting against the Mindflayer Tadpole in her brain.

There are a few options to select from here, but with the use of your Illithid Powers, you can actually convince her to turn against her own kind and feed on the other Gnolls, gaining a temporary ally for the rest of combat. To do this, you will first need to select 'Search her mind for the source of the voice' when she initiates the conversation, and then 'You are of the same pack - convince her to devour the other gnolls'

After completing the combat, either through either of these methods, or without them, two men will then run out of the cave. The elder of the two, Rugen, will then approach you, and thank you for helping with the Gnolls. After speaking to them, you will be able to enter the cave, where a locked chest is sitting just to the left of some rocks. This chest will earn you some decent loot, but it is not the chest in which you are after for Reason's Grasp.

Instead, climb up the ladder, and work your way around the rocks. There will be another wooden chest hidden among some discarded rubble, camp supplies and a barrel. You'll either need to jump over the barrel or destroy it with a weapon to access the chest - though you'll need to be careful, as there is also an Acid trap that can catch you by surprise.

Best Reason's Grasp Build and How to Get the Most Value

Reason's Grasp item
Reason's Grasp in BG3

In Baldur's Gate 3, Reason's Grasp is pretty much explicitly made for the Barbarian Class, meaning it's a great item to incorporate into your build for Karlach, or even your own Barbarian Tav. This is due to the buff that is built into the gloves, Ever Vigilant. Ever Vigilant enables the equipped character to gain 15 Temporary HP points when they choose to end their Rage. With Barbarians, ending Rage usually makes them more vulnerable to attacks and lessens their options in combat for dealing damage. However, Reason's Grasp evens this out with the addition of 15 Temp HP, granting more survivability.

As every single point of health is crucial in combat, this 15-Temp HP is actually a very significant perk that makes Reason's Grasp the perfect addition to any Barbarian build. In addition to this, Reason's Grasp also provides a +1 passive to Strength Saving Throws, which further empowers one of the key strengths of the Barbarian.

To utilize Reason's Grasp in the best way, you can also add extra Barbarian-based clothing pieces and weapons to enable some synergy between the buffs these items will bring. Most significantly, the following items listed below are some of the best choices to consider for completing your Barbarian build:

  • Bonespike Garb - This is a hugely beneficial Barbarian armor and one of the best to consider when building a Barbarian who will be using Rage every fight. Bonespike Garb grants the wearer 15 Temp HP when they choose to Rage, which is handy for enabling more safety and HP to spare for the use of Reckless Attacks. This works brilliantly with Reason's Grasp, as this will enable you to gain two sources of 15 Temp HP - 15 when you Rage, and a fresh 15 when you end your Rage. In addition to this, Bonespike Garb will reduce all incoming damage by 2, and cause the attacker to take 2 Piercing damage whenever they hit your character with a melee attack.
  • Cap Of Wrath - Cap of Wrath provides 2 turns of Wrath to the equipped character whenever they start their turn in combat with 50% HP or less. As Barbarians are a tanky melee Class who are prone to taking hits, especially when using Reckless Attack, Cap of Wrath can be very useful, as this buff will likely be triggered quite frequently. Wrath gives a +1 bonus to melee weapons attacks, which is largely beneficial to the Barbarian's playstyle, making this a worthy helmet for any Barbarian Build.
  • Boots Of Speed - The Boots of Speed are pretty great when it comes to enabling your Barbarian in combat, as they allow you to double your movement speed for a turn as a Bonus Action. As Barbarians already have decent movement speed, doubling this would allow them to get into the melee range of almost any enemy, which is needed to operate to the best of the Barbarian's ability. On turn 1, you could Bonus Action Rage, then use a thrown attack to keep Rage up. Following this, on turn 2, you can use the Bonus Action of Boots of Speed and close distance to another enemy, then swing with a melee attack. These initial first 2 rounds would set you up well for the rest of combat, enabling your Barbarian to play to the best of their potential.
