Summary

  • Morningstars in Baldur's Gate 3 deal Piercing damage and benefit from the character's Strength Modifier.
  • The standard non-magical Morningstar is a good choice for self-imposed challenges and can be found or purchased easily.
  • The best Morningstars have bonus damage and unique effects, such as Ravengard's Scourger and The Sacred Star.

Morningstars are one-handed melee weapons in Baldur's Gate 3 that deal Piercing damage, and characters must have Martial Proficiency in order to get the most out of them. Like many other great melee weapons in BG3, the character's Strength Modifier is added to the damage of all Morningstars.

Baldur's Gate 3 Best Greatswords
Baldur's Gate 3: Every Greatsword, Ranked

Greatswords are among the most powerful weapons in Baldur's Gate 3, and these are the best of the bunch.

There are only five Morningstars in the game, and each comes with two standard Actions and one Reaction. For example, Heartstopper will smash an enemy's chest in and possibly inflict Chest Trauma, and Concussive Smash will hit an enemy with all a character's might to deal damage and possibly Daze them. The best Morningstars in Baldur's Gate 3, however, have plenty of bonus damage and unique effects that make them extremely potent.

The Morningstar is the standard non-magical member of the Morningstar family in BG3, and if players are looking to make the game harder with self-imposed challenges such as only taking non-magical weapons, it is a great choice.

It is also a solid option for the very first stages of the game, and players should be able to find it in plenty of random locations fairly easily. To purchase it, however, the Morningstar is sold for a cheap price by Dammon the Infernal Mechanic and merchant at the Emerald Grove, as well as by Roah Moonglow at the Goblin Camp.

If players can spare the extra price, then the Morningstar +1 is always going to be a better option than the standard non-magical Morningstar, and it happens to be sold in the same locations. Depending on their level, players should be able to purchase the Morningstar +1 and many other great weapons from Dammon, the Infernal Mechanic and merchant who is first found in the Emerald Grove.

Baldur's Gate 3 Best Shortswords
Baldur's Gate 3: Best Shortswords, Ranked

Not all Shortswords in Baldur's Gate 3 are created equal. Here are the best ones players can find on their journey.

It is also available from Roah Moonglow at the Shattered Sanctum. The Weapon Enchantment, +1 of this weapon, simply means that +1 is added to each Attack and Damage Roll, which means players will successfully hit more often and deal slightly more damage.

3 Ravengard's Scourger

Commander's Strike: Direct an ally to strike a foe. The ally uses a reaction on their next turn to make a weapon attack.

Ravengard's Scourger, which seemingly belonged to Wyll's father, Duke Ravengard, is a Rare Morningstar with fantastic base damage thanks to its Weapon Enchantment +2, which also adds +2 to Attack Rolls as well as Damage Rolls.

The standout feature of Ravengard's Scourger is the Commander's Strike action, which should be used on the most powerful melee ally to grant them an extra attack on a key target. To find this particular Morningstar, players will need to wait until Act 3 and find the Counting House on the southern coast of the Lower City of Baldur's Gate. Once inside, the weapon can be looted from High-Security Vault Number 5.

Twist of Fortune: When you roll 2 or less with this weapon's damage die, reroll it and take the new result. Blood Money: Strike out greedily, dealing an additional 4 Piercing damage per 300 gold that the target possesses.

Twist of Fortune is an interesting Morningstar as despite only having +1 to its damage; players should deal more damage overall thanks to the Twist of Fortune passive, which rerolls the damage die upon 2 or less. While the second roll may, of course, also be bad, the chance to roll high after every low roll is naturally strong over the course of many fights.

Baldur's Gate 3 Best Axes
Baldur's Gate 3: Best Axes, Ranked

Axes in Baldur's Gate 3 can be extremely useful weapons to have access to; here are the best ones players can find during their playthrough.

The Blood Money action is arguably one of the most unique in the game, and while useless against most foes who are penniless, it can deal substantial damage against a few needlessly rich characters. Twist of Fortune is dropped by Gerringothe Thorm, the toll collector of Reithwin Tollhouse, in Act 2. If players don't want to give Gerringothe their money and end up fighting her, then they should make sure they send their money to camp; otherwise, they will be on the receiving end of a massive blow from the Blood Money attack.

1 The Sacred Star

1d8 + 2 Piercing + 1d4 Radiant

Very Rare

Radiant Strike: On a hit, inflict 1 turn of Radiating Orb upon the target. Sanctified Weapon: Undead creatures struck by this weapon are possibly Turned. Dawnburst Strike: Deal additional Radiant damage equal to your Proficiency Bonus. On a hit, light erupts around you in an area. Enemies in the light must succeed a DC 13 Constitution Saving Throw or be Blinded.

The Sacred Star is the best Morningstar in Baldur's Gate 3 by far, with excellent Piercing damage as well as bonus Radiant damage and some unique effects. By constantly inflicting enemies with Radiating Orb and giving them -1 to Attack Rolls, players are more likely to survive combat, and thanks to the Sanctified Weapon, fights against the undead are likely to end in success, too.

To get their hands on The Sacred Star, players can purchase it from Vicar Humbletoes in the house of worship known as Stormshore Tabernacle during Act 3 of the game.
