In Baldur's Gate 3, many different weapons can be collected and implemented into your character and companion builds, enhancing these characters with various Spells, buffs, and passive skills.

Among the endless weapons that can be acquired during your journey, Xyanyde is a Mace that can become a handy choice to wield in the early stages of the game. However, to obtain this weapon, you will need to choose one of two different approaches, with both options having a significant effect on the rest of your playthrough.

Baldur's Gate 3 Minthara Talking

In Baldur's Gate 3, the Xyanide mace is the signature weapon of Minthara, the Drow True soul whom you will first encounter during Act 1 of the game. Because of this, Xyanide can be acquired through two different methods, depending on the approach you'd like to take for the rest of your playthrough.

In most cases, especially if you're doing a neutral or good run of the game, you will need to defeat Minthara and the other Goblin Camp leaders during Act 1, as this will save the Tieflings and defuse their tension with the Druids. Alternatively, if you're looking to do an evil run of the game or wish to recruit Minthara rather than kill her off, you can team up with her to slaughter the Tieflings of the Grove

To take either of these routes and gain Xyanide, you will need to travel to the Goblin Camp just down from Blighted Village and enter the building. This will take you to the interior of Shattered Sanctum, an ex-Temple of Selune. Once inside, you will need to track down Minthara, one of three bosses located within this structure. In case you need help tracking her down, then feel free to refer to the map screenshot below, which has highlighted Minthara's exact position inside Shattered Sanctum.

After locating Minthara, you will now need to decide which route you would like to take. If you choose to kill Minthara and save the Tieflings, the next step is as easy as initiating combat and defeating her, plus the neighboring guards. If you plan to attack Minthara, it's a smart idea to try and trigger a surprise round. The easiest way to achieve this is by having your stealthiest party member, such as a Rogue or Ranger, use the Hide Action and then attack her whilst hidden. After defeating Minthara, the Xyanyde Mace, as well as several other notable items, will be obtainable as loot from her body.

If you choose to follow an evil route, you can obtain Xyanyde by recruiting Minthara - which will give you access to the weapon within her build, as well as enable you to move it to any other character. To recruit Minthara, you will need to speak to her, learn of her intentions regarding the Tieflings, and then give up their position at the Grove. Minthara will now instruct you to head back, maintain a cover, and then signal her the following morning by ringing the horn on top of the Grove gates. This will summon Minthara and her Goblin army, who will then invade the Grove and destroy the Tieflings, followed by the Druids if you wish.

After the slaughter has been completed, Minthara and the Goblins will celebrate with you at your camp. Following this, she will instruct you to travel to Moonrise Towers, which you will reach at the beginning of Act 2. Once you arrive, Minthara will be imprisoned in front of you. You will now need to save her by breaking her out of Moonrise Towers. The easiest way to do this is to kill the two interrogators in Minthara's cell and then use a Potion of Invisibility on Minthara before making a quick exit out of Moonrise Towers. Once you reach the safety outside of the building, Minthara will thank you and allow you to invite her to your alliance for good. Once this has been completed, you will have access to Minthara as a companion character, including all items within her inventory - which, of course, includes Xyanyde.

Xyanyde Skills & How to Get the Most Value, Explained

Xyanyde Skills & Buffs

  • Xyanyde's Fire: Once per short rest, you can encase a target in Faerie Fire for 2 turns if you miss an attack against it.
  • Faerie Fire: All targets within the light turn visible, and Attack Rolls against them have Advantage.

Essentially, this Mace enables you to proc Advantage on enemies for yourself and all of your teammates, once per short rest. Because of this, Xyanyde is one of the best weapons you can get your hands on early in Baldur's Gate 3, and it fits nicely into many different builds and can even be used in duel-wielding setups.

Baldur's Gate 3: How to Get Twist of Fortune

Twist of Fortune is a powerful Morningstar in Baldur's Gate 3 that can be acquired during Act 2 by going up against a powerful enemy.

Xyanyde is a Mace weapon, meaning it utilizes the STR stat to determine successful hits and damage. For this reason, it will work most efficiently when equipped with a character who utilizes this as their main stat. However, some choices are better than others; for example, a Barbarian will often be more effective wielding a thrown weapon or great weapon. However, the choices below may provide some decent early-game build options for the following Classes:

  • STR-based Paladin: As Minthara indicated when utilizing this weapon for herself, Xyanyde works well as an early weapon choice for a strength-based paladin. As you can stack Smites on your melee attacks, dishing out damage with Xyanyde will be very beneficial, especially when you manage to trigger the bonus Faerie Fire skill in the scenario that you miss an attack. In doing so, you will be providing strong utility not just for yourself as a Paladin but your entire team by proccing advantage against the target for 2 turns. This means that effectively, you will also be making some benefit out of an attack with Xyanyde, no matter if you are successful in your hit or not.
  • Fighter: Fighters are the strongest martial Class in the game and another worthy contender for wielding Xyanide - either as part of a STR-based dual-wielding build or in one hand whilst wielding a Shield for extra AC. When paired with a Battle Master's Maneuvers, such as Menacing Attack, Disarming Attack, and Riposte, this means you will deal extra damage on a hit, or have a chance at proccing Faerie Fire on a miss. As the Fighter has 3 Attacks, this could provide huge follow-up potential for attacks following a miss. This is largely because you will have Advantage on both of your remaining attacks and Bonus Action attacks due to Faerie Fire lasting 2 turns.
