The foundations for every character in Baldur's Gate 3 are the ability scores for each of their stats. Ability scores determine modifiers for just about everything a character does throughout the game, and depending on their class and what they want to use them for, some ability scores will need to be higher than others.
Every class uses ability score in some way to determine damage output or how well spells work, so it's important to have the right ability score for your chosen class. There are many ways to get more ability score points, either through a specific feat, unique interactions, or items. Here's which ability score you should focus on increasing, depending on the class of the character.

Best Abilities to Increase for Each Class in Baldur's Gate 3
The Ability Improvement feat in Baldur's Gate 3 can and should be taken every four levels. This feat gives you two points to distribute however you want, through you can only go up to a maximum of twenty on any ability using this feat. There are additional items and unique interactions that can be found randomly in the game that let you go beyond this limit, though they are very rare. Every character in the game can get this feat, making it the best feat universally, as it makes everyone better at what they already do.
The abilities in the table below are listed in order of importance to maximize first.

Ability Score Modifiers Explained in Baldur's Gate 3
For every two points in a major ability, you'll get a +1 modifier for all skills affected by that ability. Usually, the highest modifier you'll get is a +5 by reaching 20 in any ability score unless you find something that lets you go beyond 20. In the case with dexterity, for example, your armor class and initiative are affected by that ability, so getting a +3 modifier for that ability will give both your AC and initiative a +3 boost. This modifier can have a reverse effect for ability scores under ten, which then results in negative ability score modifiers for all affected skills.
