Final Fantasy 14, Square Enix's long-running MMO, is inarguably a major success. It's such a success that apparently Square Enix is taking parts of the game to use in other projects that it's currently developing. That's what Babylon's Fall producer Yosuke Saito confirmed, following confused fan reactions after discovering Final Fantasy 14 gear, emotes, and other content within the action game's beta. The reason why, however, won't be particularly surprising to Final Fantasy 14 fans.

As an explanation, Saito says that borrowing content from Final Fantasy 14 will allow the development team to offer a much broader range of gear and emotes than would otherwise have been possible. The Platinum Games team is still creating its own assets for gear and emotes, of course. Saito even makes clear that most of the gear and emotes in Babylon's Fall will be original. Final Fantasy 14's assets will make for a bigger and better game.

Further, Saito tells a story regarding giving a presentation about Babylon's Fall at a Square Enix company meeting. During the meeting, Final Fantasy 14's beloved game director and producer Naoki Yoshida offered his help for the project, leading Saito to excitedly say, "Yes, please!" Suffice to say, the "borrowing" wasn't don't just with Yoshida's blessing but at his distinct encouragement. It sounds like the Final Fantasy 14 team saved the Babylon's Fall team a lot of work, as a result.

Yoshida also offered a statement on the matter, encouraging everyone to play Babylon's Fall as it'd be a reward for all of the work the Final Fantasy 14 team has done, too. He also takes the opportunity to mention that Final Fantasy 14 has a free trial, for those who haven't tried the MMO yet.

There are two different "controversies" to unpack here. The first is the worry that Babylon's Fall "stole" these assets, which is clearly untrue. The second is the worry that Babylon's Fall is trying to cut corners or resell content from other games. That's a worry that's less simple to address, because it won't be clear until the game is released and playable. At least on paper, however, Square Enix appears to simply be doing what it can to make Babylon's Fall a big and exciting experience, as promised.
