Though it's one of the more hotly-anticipated ARPGs of this generation, precious little is known about Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed at this time. This first-person action RPG set in the universe of Pillars of Eternity is still mostly a big question mark, though the developer did already establish that it's a more action-oriented game with a focus on dynamic, exciting gameplay sections.

While there are currently multiple games in development at Obsidian Entertainment, such as The Outer Worlds 2, Dubois' job description is very particular in clarifying that he is working on Avowed, specifically, and that he is using Unreal Engine 5. Now, there haven't been any major announcements to suggest as much as of right now, but it's entirely possible that Obsidian was gearing up to break the news to its community sometime down the line, only for Dubois to get ahead of it instead.

The list of games made in Unreal Engine 5 is growing at a steady pace, and it's not that big of a stretch to imagine Avowed uses this particular engine as well. Obsidian has already put out an Unreal Engine 4 game with The Outer Worlds, for one, and the consensus seems to be that converting from UE4 to UE5 is a reasonably simple process, broadly speaking. The notion of this particular developer switching over to a new version of Unreal is, then, rather reasonable.

According to insiders, Avowed's next big reveal is the release date, and if the game really has been moved on over to Unreal Engine 5, Obsidian Entertainment is bound to make note of that, too. Epic Games suggests that UE5 delivers a more powerful and comprehensive set of tools for developers to work with than UE4 did, which could seem extremely enticing to the developers of a large, sprawling ARPG such as Avowed.

In fact, even CD Projekt Red, whose previous output was bound mostly with its proprietary RED Engine, announced that The Witcher 4 will use Unreal Engine 5. In comparison, Obsidian should have an easier time adapting to the challenges of an all-new software suite, should this information be correct. As ever, it's worth remembering that this is unconfirmed and unofficial, and that the developers will clarify whether Avowed is using UE5 or not in due time.
