More excitement is starting to build around Avowed due to its launch being on the horizon, with fans finally being close to getting their hands on the intriguing fantasy RPG. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, prospective players are keen to see if the title will deliver on its aims to portray a deeply immersive fantasy setting with a wide range of exploration and combat mechanics.
Thankfully, Avowed belongs to the longstanding Pillar of Eternity franchise, meaning the upcoming game has a wealth of established lore to pull from in its portrayal of the Living Lands. Fans already have a pretty solid overview of what they can expect from Avowed, with it being confirmed that the title will only feature a small number of companions that can join the player on their journey. This has already drawn comparisons to the companion availability of other Obsidian titles like The Outer Worlds, but a smaller roster of companions may serve to help Avowed's story in the long run.
Avowed's Placement on the Timeline Explained
With Avowed bringing Pillars of Eternity's world of Eora into the action RPG genre, the era of the lore's history it depicts is a crucial detail.
Avowed's Small Companion Roster May Prove That Sometimes Less is More
Avowed has already revealed a lot of the gameplay qualities that make it an exciting RPG title, with its deeply complex setting of the Living Lands belonging to the wider fantastical world of Eora. These locations are home to a wide range of races and otherworldly species that the player will encounter, with its combat offering an interchangeable blend of melee, magic, and firearms that can be used simultaneously.
The character interaction of RPG titles such as this is equally important, however, with Obsidian Entertainment already outlining the kinds of figures that fans will meet during their exploits in the Living Lands. For example, it has been confirmed that Avowed will boldly only feature four distinct companions throughout the game, with up to two companions potentially being in a player's party at any given time.
This seems like a very small number of potential companions in a game as ambitious as Avowed, with past Obsidian titles like 2019's The Outer Worlds having six companions. Other classic RPG franchises like Dragon Age usually aim for about nine companions per title, with other games like Skyrim having a much more robust number of potential followers.
The four companions for Avowed are Giatta, Kai, Marius, and Yatzli, with each figure possessing different backgrounds and somewhat varied fighting archetypes. A current concern around this small number of companions is whether they will be able to give an accurate overall depth to the Living Lands and the various cultures that exist within it, with some locations potentially feeling less fleshed out due to their lack of an associated companion.
Each Avowed Companion Should Have an Immense Level of Depth and Detail
With that being said, it is confirmed that each companion in Avowed will have their own associated quests and complexities, and they will hopefully be allowed to shine more than ever. As Obsidian only has to accommodate four companions, each of them should be given much more screen time and concentrated development, hopefully creating four deeply memorable and layered figures that will go on to define a lot of the game's experiences.
While it can be fun to choose from a wide range of companions in RPG titles, too much variety can often feel bloated, with certain companions clearly having more importance and overall development than others. Avowed's four companions will hopefully avoid this fate, and if Obsidian puts the necessary resources into developing these figures, then the upcoming title could have some of the most memorable companion selections that the RPG genre has seen in quite some time.
