Avowed’s 2025 Roadmap Explained

After a long wait, Avowed finally came to Windows and Xbox Series S/X consoles in the first quarter of 2025. While the Obsidian Entertainment title had clear strong points in its narrative and combat mechanics, a handful of areas still need finishing touches before Avowed's Eora can be considered a complete fantasy universe. With this in mind, the developer has continued releasing patches at regular intervals, and the recently unveiled patch 1.4 came with a roadmap showcasing a set of updates planned for Avowed throughout 2025.

Obsidian's Updates for Avowed Could Yield Rewards

Obsidian Entertainment plans to roll out an update for Avowed every quarter in line with the seasons, with the Spring 2025 version already live for players to engage with. The developer will consider player feedback as its primary developmental basis when building these updates - which could be a harbinger of good things regarding player satisfaction.

Accessibility features headline the Spring season, beginning with the Arachnophobia Safe Mode, which replaces spider enemies with round, floating matter with swords instead of legs to cater to players who do not appreciate interacting with the creepy crawlies. In terms of movement mechanics, mouse and keyboard support is now available on the Xbox for those who wish to experience the RPG differently.

The fog of war has also seen a handful of touches from Obsidian. Although it still serves its purpose as an obscuring dynamic, it now clears far easier when players progress through the map. While this can be seen as a mere cosmetic change, the fog-clearing update facilitates uncovering more hidden locations during exploration.

With the update, illusions can also be dispelled by utilizing Soul Pods - except Ryngrim’s entrance, which requires Yatzli’s aid to overcome. Additionally, killing Critters is no longer a barren venture, as there's a chance to drop valuable loot when they die. There are also unique gear stat buffs and more crafting materials to add a new dynamic to the game.

Most of the summer updates are lined up to solve problems Avowed initially got negative reviews for, like players being unable to mark locations on their map, hindering exploration and immersion. The cooking and crafting system was front and center of these complaints owing to the perceived lackluster effects in Avowed's food recipes.

Other additions in the Summer Update include new active and passive abilities, unique weapons, and armor. The idea behind these changes is to bring a fresh outlook to Avowed's combat and for players to customize it to their unique preferences.

In the fall, Obsidian Entertainment has New Game Plus lined up for Avowed to give players a new reason to boot up the game even months after its release. The last zone of the current meta has a bevy of powerful weapons - with a slight catch (players don't get to experience a late-game weapon's power for long). With New Game Plus, however, players can carry over their favorite weapons into a new playthrough and also explore multiple endings without having to layer multiple game saves.

Additionally, owing to popular demand, Photo Mode will also be added to Avowed. Other offerings include a new weapon type and customization options that allow players to change their appearances in the world and explore new character and feature presets.
