Summary

  • Avengers: Doomsday boasts a massive ensemble with 27 confirmed characters, including returning favorites and new faces.
  • Filming for Avengers: Doomsday officially began on April 28, leading to concerns over the tight schedule ahead of the May 1, 2026 release.
  • The film's production faces potential delays or rushing due to tight timelines, contrasting with typical superhero blockbuster production schedules.

Avengers: Doomsday stands poised to bring back an ensemble-level aura and hype on a scale unseen by the MCU faithful since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. However, if recent word from director brothers Anthony and Joe Russo is any indication, the age of Doctor Doom may face some scheduling turbulence.

Avengers: Doomsday’s ensemble is one for the books. Although missing the familiar faces of Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers and Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa, the movie, slated for May 1, 2026, will feature 27 confirmed characters, including new and well-known names. Formerly deceased Tony Stark, Robert Downey Jr. Will play the big baddie, Victor Von “Doctor” Doom, and would share the screen with the Thunderbolts* Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Wyatt Russell (John Walker), David Harbour (Red Guardian), and Lewis Pullman (Sentry); The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards), Vanessa Kirby (Susan Storm) Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm) and Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm)as well as Fox’s original X-Men— Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), James Marsden (Cyclops), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler) and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique).

RUMOR: Avengers: Doomsday Script Still Not Completed Despite Major Filming Update

Marvel Studios has reportedly still not finalized the Avengers: Doomsday script amid huge filming news.

Avengers: Doomsday Officially Began Shooting Today

Filming Should Have Begun Earlier, Given That the Movie's Release Date Isn't Too Far Away

Filming of Avengers: Doomsday was thought to have commenced on March 26, when Marvel Studios announced such. But it turns out that it may have been only the initial stages of pre-production. The real deal, shooting, officially began today, April 28, as announced by director-brothers Anthony and Joseph Russo on Instagram. The post, which shows a production chair with the name “Victor Von Doom” boldly written, was captioned “Day one…” It’s confirmative action of Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige's comments at a press conference on Sunday about filming for the movie beginning the next day.

It’s encouraging news that Avengers: Doomsday has officially gotten the cast and cameras rolling. But for a movie slated to be out in a year, it’s hard to think of this as anything but late scheduling. In Hollywood, the average duration between filming, post-production and release for superhero blockbusters is about a year and a quarter (16 months); that’s because shooting any superhero blockbuster, talk more of a grand ensemble one like Avengers: Doomsday, is no joke. These movies demand heavy visual effects (VFX), CGI characters—some of which require months of shot-by-shot layering—and huge sets.

James Gunn’s Superman commenced filming on February 29, 2024, and is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025. Avengers: Endgame took even longer, wrapping principal photography five months after it began and was released a further 15 months later, almost 18 months after filming began. Besides, even if Avengers: Doomsday were to have a speedy production, would it come at the expense of marketing? There's no debate about hype and build-up of events not being anywhere near the levels of Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame.

Given these realities, Avengers: Doomsday faces three possible fates: it will either need to be delayed, rushed, or both. To be fair, none of this is entirely Marvel’s fault. The film is, after all, a massive pivot from the originally planned Avengers: Kang Dynasty. Regardless, it’s a race against the clock for Feige and crew.
