A highly anticipated sci-fi movie will be released in December 2025, and it looks like the best one in the franchise yet.
The 2020s have seen some memorable and well-crafted sci-fi movies, including Blumhouse's take on The Invisible Man, the quiet No One Will Save You, and the fascinating Mickey 17. 2026 will also be a big year for sci-fi fans, as audiences look forward to the film adaptation of Andy Weir's novel Project Hail Mary starring Ryan Gosling. But before this year is over, audiences can head to their local theater and watch the next entry in a beloved franchise.
'It's Pretty Heart-Wrenching In A Good Way' Avatar: Fire And Ash Is Already Being Hailed As 'The Best' Of The Franchise
Early feedback for Avatar: Fire And Ash has led to claims it's the "best" of the franchise.
The Amazing And Impressive Avatar: Fire And Ash Trailer Is Here
The trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third movie in James Cameron's epic and exciting sci-fi franchise, is here, and it's as epic as fans hoped for. Set to a beautiful score, the trailer teases the return of beloved characters Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) and Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) as they experience tension with Varang (Oona Chaplin), the leader of the Ash People, a Na'vi tribe. Fans will be glad to see Neytiri front and center here, as she's a smart and fascinating character who should be the focal point.
The original Avatar was released in 2009 and was followed by the sequel The Way of Water in 2022. While there was a long wait between the first and second films, fans haven't had to be quite as patient for more of this epic franchise. But, until this impressive trailer was released, audiences were eager to hear more about the third film. Understandably, Cameron didn't want to share much about the story or characters. In a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said:
"It’s really f*cking cool. You’re going to love it. And I can’t talk about it."
In the same interview, Cameron shared that he would like to direct Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. However, it's going to be a lengthy wait for both of those films. The fourth is planned for December 21st, 2029 and the fifth is slated for December 19th, 3031. From the trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash, it's clear that this movie will have some memorable fight scenes, and it seems like it will have a more grim and serious tone.
Avatar: Fire and Ash was always a sure thing considering the massive success of the franchise. Avatar grossed over $2 billion at the global box office, according to Box Office Mojo.
But, before fans can see Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, which will likely be just as well-crafted and beautiful as the previous entries in the franchise, Cameron has another movie in the works. According to THR, Cameron is co-writing a movie based on the novel The Devils by Joe Abercrombie. The fantasy story is about elves who eat flesh and the monsters who try to stop them in Europe. It will no doubt be just as impressive as the Avatar franchise and will be another Cameron film that fans will have to see as soon as it's released in theaters. Cameron is also collaborating with Billie Eilish on a 3D project, which sounds interseting.
Avatar: Fire and Ash will be released in theaters on December 19th, 2025.

Avatar: Fire and Ash will be the first project in the series not expected to bring groundbreaking new visuals, but it's got something arguably better.
