About Matthew Schomer
Matthew is a journalist in the news department at TheBestWarGames. He holds a Bachelor's degree in journalism from Kent State University and has been an avid gamer since 1985. Matthew formerly served as a news and features editor, trainer, and video producer at DualShockers, specializing in short-format video guides.
Prior to entering the world of electronic entertainment, he was a reporter for multiple rural Ohio newspapers, most notably The Salem News and the Morning Journal (Lisbon), specializing in state and local politics, law, education, and human interest. While those are all topics that interest him, gaming has been his true passion since the age of 3, and he's thrilled about the opportunity to bring information and entertainment to the gaming community.
Matthew has also interviewed several developers and other personalities from around the gaming community, including Visual Concepts creative director Lynell Jinks, Standing Stone Games' head of studio Rob Ciccolini, musician CG5 and WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes.
Industry Focus
I've been write all manner of news articles pertaining to video games and their crossovers into the realms of television and movies since 2022. In the past, I've also made video versions of top-read guides, as well as list and games review videos.
When I'm not writing, you can usually find me behind my computer monitor, Xbox Series X, or Nintendo Switch. I dabble in a lot of genres, but I lean heavily towards lore-heavy RPGs and simulations with plenty of room for self-insertion.
Favorite Games
Some of my all-time favorite RPGs include Suikoden 3, Baldur's Gate 3, Fallout 2, Fallout: New Vegas, and Knights of the Old Republic.
As for simulations, The Sims 4 is still king, but I also enjoy the Civilization series, Sid Meier's Pirates, and old-school Tycoon games on PC.
Lately, I've been exploring every possible combination of outcomes I can think of in Dispatch, living out my high-seas fantasies in another playthrough of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, and trying to keep my Jan Dolskis alive for another run of The Alters.
Favorite Console
Tough one. I've been gaming since 1985, so my first console was the Intellivision, a clunky, wood-paneled alternative to the Atari, and you never forget your first love.
Historically, I adore the SNES for its expansive catalog and the PlayStation 2 for the leaps forward it made in gaming, but my current console of choice is the Xbox Series X.
