About Emma Neeson
When not messing around with Risk of Rain 2 mods, Emma can be found absorbed in their latest creative pursuit. Passionate about writing and video games, with an English degree to boot, Emma is always looking for the next great story to get lost in. As well as working for The Best War Games as a Contributor, they pursue their own projects, whether that's creative writing or something crafty.
Gaming has been a part of their life ever since Jak and Daxter on the PS2. They’ve spent a long time creating many well-regarded maps for a Dawn of War II mod and organizing tournaments for a couple of RTS communities. In recent years, they’ve explored every nook and cranny of the Soulsborne series and thought more about how people form attachments with the virtual spaces we inhabit. Emma is also waiting for a new Deus Ex game, and they’ve been waiting a while...
Industry Focus
There isn't a medium quite like video games, and I find the highly interactive nature of them means we form connections to a franchise in ways that are different to films and books. Whether it's clever narrative techniques to tie gameplay and story together, or just a particularly powerful moment, a lot of us have felt immersed in digital worlds. I like to use my work to examine what makes games special for this, often focussing on the ones that have made me pause to think more than once.
Favorite Games
I know it's partly nostalgia, but the Jak and Daxter series has to be at the top - it's just been way too formative for me. Besides that, I love the Soulsborne games, Skyrim, Deus Ex, Alan Wake, Control, Risk of Rain, Lego Star Wars, Battlefield, various Warhammer games, Company of Heroes 2 and more. I have far more hours in Destiny 2 than I care to admit.
Proudest Gaming Achievement
That's tricky, but it's got to be either one of these two. Years ago I followed a really helpful guide on how to beat Deus Ex: Human Revolution "zero takedown ghost", where you leave zero trace of your presence in a level and can't use stealth tools - it really challenged me to think about how to watch for routines and take windows of opportunity. But if not that, it was when I went five vs one in Chivalry and won.
