How To Play Wordle
While Wordle is a fairly simple game to learn, it can be difficult to master. There are several ways to go about starting and playing this game, but in order for players to make their own best Wordle strategies, they will need to learn how to play first. Here are the rules:
First, head to the New York Times Games site. This is where it has been hosted since the newspaper giant purchased Wordle in February 2022. There are tons of copycat apps and sites out there, but this is the original. Everything in this article will be about the NYT's version; others will have different answers and may even have slightly different rules of play.
Next, choose a starting word. It must be five letters long, a real English word, and should contain letters common to Wordle puzzles. Type this word into the top of the 5x6 grid on the Wordle website and press enter. The letters will then change colors.
- Letters that turn gray are incorrect and will not appear in the answer of the day.
- Letters that turn green are right and in the correct place in the answer.
- Letters that turn yellow are right but in the wrong location inside the word.
Given these clues, players have just six tries to get to the answer, with each guessing giving them more clues by way of the colors of the letters. Puzzles reset daily; everyone will get a brand-new word of the day when the clock strikes midnight local time.
