Summary

  • Astro Bot's concept art reveals potential cut cameos from Twisted Metal and The Fat Princess IPs.
  • Despite not making the final cut, DLC could bring these unused cameos back to the game.
  • Expanding the roster of Sony IP-inspired Bots would enhance the PlayStation celebration in Astro Bot.

Highly rated platformer Astro Bot could have featured in-game cameos from Twisted Metal and The Fat Princess IPs, as suggested by a glimpse at the game's newly surfaced concept art. Being a PlayStation first-party game itself, Astro Bot celebrates the console giant's legacy through various character cameos that give a nod to old and new PlayStation franchises.

In a year that saw PlayStation get an outstanding first-party title like Helldivers 2, Astro Bot has emerged as the outright superior release as far as the reviews are concerned. Team Asobi's platformer has garnered dozens of highly positive reviews and has become the highest-rated game of 2024 based on average critic score, beating out some of the biggest games of the year, like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. One of the enjoyable highlights of the PS5 exclusive has been its many PlayStation IP cameos which, a new report reveals, could have included at least two more unused characters.

Astro Bot Snubs One of the PS5's Best Exclusives

The newly-released PlayStation 5 exclusive Astro Bot snubs one of the console's best exclusive games to date.

As revealed by the Astro Bot concept art in a VGC video, Sweet Tooth from the Twisted Metal series and The Fat Princess's titular character could have been a part of the game at some point during development. The concept image shows a swarm of Bots, several of which bear likenesses to some popular characters from PlayStation first-party games. Two of these unique Bots appear to be heavily inspired by Sweet Tooth and The Fat Princess, given certain distinguishable character design attributes.

Concept Art Hints at Astro Bot's Unused Cameos

The absence of the Bot with the flaming hair and the Bot with the crown from the game, as seen in the concept art, hint that plans regarding these two Sony IPs may have changed during production. Despite having their character art done, these two Bots were apparently dropped before the final version of Astro Bot hit the shelves. However, this doesn't necessarily mean these cameos may never happen in the future. As confirmed previously by Team Asobi head Nicolas Doucet, the studio is already thinking about expanding Astro Bot with DLC containing new levels and more surprises. Based on this, it won't be far-fetched to think at least one of these unused cameos could make its way into the game when the DLC rolls out.

If Sweet Tooth and The Fat Princess join the roster of Sony IP-inspired Bots available in the game, it would further add to Astro Bot's extensive list of cameos. Given the relevance Twisted Metal, in particular, has to PlayStaton consoles, it can be safely assumed longtime fans of the vehicular combat game franchise would be happy with Sweet Tooth's addition. Beginning from the original PlayStation, the series has been exclusive to Sony's console since the former's inception.
