Summary
- Astro Bot first month sales are higher than Sonic Frontiers and Crash Bandicoot 4 in Europe.
- Astro Bot is believed to be performing better than most other 3D platformers of the last 10 years, minus Super Mario.
- Sony has yet to announce total sales numbers for the critically-acclaimed game.
The critically-acclaimed PlayStation 5 exclusive Astro Bot is reportedly outperforming more-established IP in its genre in at least one region. Astro Bot hit store shelves last month and was an instant hit with fans and critics. Currently the highest-rated new game release of 2024, some have gone as far as to call Astro Bot one of the best 3D platformers ever made.
Initially, it didn't seem as though the high praise for Astro Bot was going to translate to strong sales. Early sales reports out of Japan were disappointing, but data from elsewhere indicated that the game was outperforming others in its genre, particularly in Europe. Now the latest sales update on Astro Bot is even better news for the new 3D platformer.
GamesIndustry's Christopher Dring recently shared some details about Europe's recent sales data. According to Dring, game sales were up 20% in September in the region, with PS5 and Xbox console sales down, but Switch console sales up. Dring added that Astro Bot sales were 34% higher than Sonic Frontiers and 52% higher than Crash Bandicoot 4 in their respective debut months. Astro Bot outdoing more established IP like Sonic and Crash is a big deal, and hopefully signals to PlayStation that fans want to see more games like this in the future.
Astro Bot is Doing Well in Europe
Dring also claimed that Astro Bot "has done better than basically every new 3D platform game in the last 10 years" minus Nintendo's Super Mario series. It wouldn't have been realistic to expect Astro Bot to go toe-to-toe with Super Mario sales-wise, but many may not have expected it to perform so well against Sonic and Crash either.
Astro Bot isn't exactly a brand-new IP, but it was a largely unproven one in terms of commercial viability until the latest game. Prior to Astro Bot, most of the Astro games have been pack-in titles or tech demos for PlayStation hardware, with the one exception being Astro Bot: Rescue Mission for PlayStation VR. Astro Bot: Rescue Mission is one of the highest-rated virtual reality games ever made, but VR is still niche, and so it was unclear if the more traditional Astro Bot was going to do numbers or not.
Now, it must be stressed that we do not have a full picture of Astro Bot's sales just yet. Sony has yet to reveal the exact number of copies sold. Still, based on the data that has been shared so far, it's safe to assume that while Astro Bot may not be doing quite as well as some of Sony's bigger releases, it is still a big hit for its genre.
