Summary

  • Astro Bot on PS5 appears to have a high player count, according to trophy data.
  • The game ranks as one of the biggest single-player PS5 releases of 2024.
  • Despite challenges in Japan, the game has performed well in other markets based on trophy data.

According to new trophy data, Astro Bot appears to be off to a strong start on PlayStation 5. While Astro Bot was launched between the failed Concord and the controversial reveal of the PS5 Pro, the latest player count projections show the game has not gotten overlooked by PlayStation fans.

Developed by Team Asobi, Astro Bot is the latest outing featuring the titular robot. Following up on the success of Astro’s Playroom, a pack-in game for the PS5, Astro Bot expands upon its predecessor’s concepts, creating a much bigger 3D platformer for gamers to enjoy. And so far, the reception has been overwhelmingly positive, with numerous critics giving Astro Bot glowing reviews, citing positives like effective use of the PS5’s DualSense controller features. Astro Bot is even in the top 100 highest-rated video games of all time. Despite the positive critical reception, fans still had to wait and see if the game would attract a large audience.

Fortunately, fears of Astro Bot not gaining mainstream popularity have been partly assuaged thanks to new information from TrueTrophies. According to its trophy data, in conjunction with additional data from GameInsights, the game has become the sixth-biggest PS5 single-player 2024 release. While its position could change as several months remain in the year, this position puts Astro Bot directly behind Dragon’s Dogma 2, Capcom’s successful RPG. In addition, this data reveals that Team Asobi’s platformer outperformed 2024 PS5 games like Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin.

According to data from TrueTrophies

It is also worth mentioning that TrueTrophies chose to include some questionable titles in its top 10 single-player PS5 games of 2024. For example, it noted that The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered was available for only $10 to those who already owned a copy on PS4, helping it top the chart. In addition, the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC for 2022's Elden Ring was counted on the list. Furthermore, TrueTrophies noted that data could not distinguish the difference between the base game and its 2024 expansion, making an accurate reading for Shadow of the Erdtree challenging. With these factors in mind, Astro Bot’s launch data could be considered even more impressive, ranking fourth on the list if the Elden Ring DLC and The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered were removed.

While Astro Bot has struggled to gain popularity in Japan based on reports, it appears the game has sold much better in some other markets, as evidenced by this latest trophy data. Hopefully, the game continues to sell well for those who want more Astro Bot games in the future. Regardless, additional content is expected to be added to the existing game in the coming months.
