Assassin's Creed Shadows players are expressing their frustration following the news of a planned change coming to the title that involves how the in-game map will be revealed. Since its release on March 20, Assassin's Creed Shadows has received a number of major and minor updates, with a planned expansion set to launch in September 2025.

Despite some of the controversy over the game's historical depictions in the lead up to release, Assassin's Creed Shadows is a certified hit for Ubisoft, setting impressive player milestones and gathering praise from both critics and fans. Now, Ubisoft is gearing up to attract curious latecomers and keep existing players engaged through post-release updates and content. Though the game already has an internal battle pass-like system for earning new cosmetic upgrades, updates add new features and address outstanding issues, ensuring that even a non-live-service game can improve in response to player feedback.

Assassin's Creed Shadows Confirms Claws of Awaji Expansion Release Date

Ubisoft provides a new post-launch roadmap for Assassin's Creed Shadows, revealing launch dates for new features and the Claws of Awaji expansion.

Unfortunately, it seems like one update scheduled for July 29 has attracted the ire of some veteran players. The issue at hand is the plan to alter how the map is revealed, "unfogging" large portions of the in-game map whenever Assassin's Creed Shadows protagonists Naoe or Yasuke activate a synchronization point. Currently, the map is only uncovered in a radius around the player, and requires that they personally visit any place they wish to reveal. Some players reacted negatively to news of the planned change, complaining that Ubisoft's update risks "invalidating" the hours they spent uncovering the entire map "manually."

Players Complain That Assassin's Creed Shadows Map Update Will "Ruin" Hours of Work

While some players seemed bitter that the update might make their effort to manually uncover the map seem for naught, others were proud that they did it before the update made everything more convenient. They said they enjoyed the time they spent going to locations not really meant to be visited by players, making them feel like explorers in a new land. Others, particularly those still playing Assassin's Creed Shadows or planning to start, welcomed the improvement to the game's quality of life. Some hoped that the change would make it into the rumored Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Assassin's Creed Shadows.

There's no doubting that the new Assassin's Creed Shadows map update will be more convenient for most players. After all, revealing more of the map will make it easier to locate points of interest. Similarly, the Assassin's Creed Scout system will be more efficient, as players will be able to more precisely target their efforts to locate mission objectives. That said, it's understandable that some players might feel like the time they spent is being obviated by Ubisoft's attempt to make the game easier for new players to get into.
