Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be playable on Steam Deck after all. The next chapter in Ubisoft’s historical action franchise will finally fulfill many gamers’ wishes for an Assassin’s Creed game set in feudal Japan, with players taking control of two different characters on a shared mission during the Sengoku period in the 16th century. Assassin’s Creed Shadows stars Fujibayashi Naoe, a shinobi who embodies the traditional Assassin’s Creed stealth gameplay, and Yasuke, an African samurai more geared toward direct combat.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will launch across most major platforms on March 20, including PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Its presence on the former had many wondering if Assassin's Creed Shadows would be playable on the Steam Deck, Valve’s answer to the Nintendo Switch that allows Steam users to take their PC library with them on the go. Unfortunately, Ubisoft announced that Assassin’s Creed Shadows wouldn’t be playable on the Steam Deck at launch due to the handheld’s specs being below the game’s minimum PC requirements.

In a message on the official Assassin’s Creed Twitter account, the developers behind Assassin’s Creed Shadows have announced that the game will support the Steam Deck at launch, though they are currently waiting for official Steam Deck verification from Valve. This departure from the previous decision was due to fans continually asking about the Steam Deck. More information will come soon, including the official confirmation of Assassin’s Creed Shadows being playable on the Steam Deck.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Might Be Playable on Steam Deck at Launch

It’s worth pointing out that Ubisoft’s announcement of Assassin’s Creed Shadows not being compatible with the Steam Deck came in late February, about a month before the game’s full release. The announcement also specifically said that it wouldn’t be playable on the Steam Deck “at launch,” leaving open the possibility of it being optimized for Valve’s handheld in a future update.

Now it seems that the developers of Assassin’s Creed Shadows have managed to get the game working on the Steam Deck, much to the relief of gamers hoping to take the upcoming action epic with them on the go. This latest update isn’t an absolute confirmation that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will run on the Steam Deck when it finally launches on March 20, as Valve still needs to officially certify the game. This isn't to mention the technical hurdles that will likely come from fitting the game’s impressive visuals onto the Steam Deck’s hardware, especially given the previous claims that it wouldn’t meet the minimum requirements to run Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
