Summary

  • Ubisoft may release nine Assassin's Creed games in six years, reviving a more frequent release cycle.
  • Recent success of Shadows hints at a positive future for the franchise.
  • Rumored titles like Jade, Invictus, and possible remakes indicate a potential busy schedule for Ubisoft.

A new rumor has suggested that the Assassin's Creed franchise could be planning to release nine games over the next six years. This would mark the beginning of an aggressive release cycle for the Assassin's Creed franchise, which has taken a "less is more" approach over the last five years.

Assassin's Creed is arguably the most important franchise for Ubisoft right now, with the company struggling after high-profile flops like Star Wars Outlaws. The good news for Ubisoft is that the recently released Assassin's Creed Shadows topped sales charts for several weeks after its launch, indicating it has been a success for the company. 2020's Assassin's Creed Valhalla and 2023's Mirage were the only mainline titles released before Shadows so far this decade, a quiet period compared to the series' busy record throughout the 2010s. However, Ubisoft could be about to ramp up the releases back to previous levels.

According to Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson, Ubisoft's current roadmap for the Assassin's Creed franchise over the next six years includes nine titles in total. This will include three remakes, one of which is the long-rumored Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag remake. On top of this are two new RPGs, the next of which Henderson claims is currently codenamed Scarlet. Henderson says that the next Assassin's Creed game to be released is codenamed Jade, while there could be multiple multiplayer games in the works, going by Invictus and Emerald at the moment.

It's worth mentioning that this reportedly represents Ubisoft's current plans for the Assassin's Creed roadmap over the next six years, and plans can always change going forward. Henderson mentions in his report that an Assassin's Creed game for Netflix, codenamed Mask, has likely been cancelled, so nothing is certain at the moment. It remains to be seen whether Ubisoft's new subsidiary backed by Tencent, created to secure the long-term success of its key franchises, will have any impact on these plans, either.

It was first rumored in late last year that Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed release plans could get way more aggressive. If it can make it work while maintaining fan interest and high quality, then it could pay off massively for the company. However, releasing so many titles in such a short space of time always runs the risk of creating franchise fatigue, which could backfire for Ubisoft. It's worth remembering that some of these rumored games are in very different genres, with both multiplayer and single-player titles allowing Assassin's Creed to appeal to various types of gamers.
