Summary

  • Assassin's Creed Mirage has a low player count upon its Steam launch compared to recent entries.
  • Ubisoft's decision to delay Mirage on Steam may have impacted its player count negatively.
  • Future Ubisoft games, including Assassin's Creed Shadows, will launch day one on Steam.

Assassin's Creed Mirage has gotten off to a rough start on Steam, after launching to a much lower peak player count than recent entries in the series. Although Assassin's Creed Mirage has been available on other PC storefronts since October 2023, it was recently released on Steam after a year of waiting.

For many gamers, Assassin's Creed Mirage represented a great opportunity to hop back into the long-running series, which had taken a new RPG approach with entries Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla. Assassin's Creed Mirage received positive reviews from critics, and was generally seen as a solid return to the series' roots. It was essentially what many fans had called for over the years. Despite its positive reception, Ubisoft's decision to leave it off Steam at launch meant that plenty of PC gamers hadn't played Assassin's Creed Mirage yet.

SteamDB player count charts don't paint a pretty picture for the early days of Assassin's Creed Mirage's Steam release. On the first Saturday of its release, when it would be expected to retain the most players, the game peaked at 6,381 players at the time of writing. Looking at the recent games in the Assassin's Creed series, Origins peaked at 41,551 players, Odyssey at 62,069, and Valhalla at 15,679. That's a considerable decrease for Assassin's Creed Mirage. In the interest of fairness, Valhalla is the only game of the RPG trio that didn't have a day-one Steam release, which explains its own lower number.

Assassin's Creed Mirage's Steam Player Count is Lower Than Recent Entries

To put these numbers into perspective, at the exact time of writing, Assassin's Creed Mirage has 3,691 current players. Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which was released back in 2018, has 3,370. These rough early numbers could change, of course, but they're certainly surprising, especially given that Assassin's Creed Mirage launched on Steam with a steep 50% discount, bringing it down to $24.99 until October 24.

There's no doubt that the numbers are skewed by the delayed Steam release, but that won't be a problem for Ubisoft games going forward. Assassin's Creed Shadows will launch day one on Steam, as will most games from the publisher going forward, which should make a big difference in making that player count look much healthier for the series. As for the series as a whole, it's going to be a busy few years. A recent rumor has suggested that ten Assassin's Creed games are set to release in the next five years, which would be a large ramp-up for a series that didn't release a mainline title in either 2021 or 2022. Let's wait and see if it comes to fruition.
