The hype around Assassin’s Creed Shadows has well and truly settled, which is why fans are reminiscing over older titles in Ubisoft’s franchise, and how one Assassin’s Creed 2 promise has never been fulfilled. Assassin’s Creed 2 was released all the way back in 2009, serving as a direct sequel to the first 2007 game. Launched on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, AC2 follows Desmond Miles, who relives genetic memories of his ancestor Ezio Auditore da Firenze, in an attempt to learn about the ancient First Civilization race and end the Assassin-Templar discourse.
It’s easy to lose count of the Assassin’s Creed games that have followed since 2009, with the series delivering fan-favorites such as Revelations, Black Flag, and the open-world endeavor Origins. Following the latest franchise release in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, players are expecting the Claws of Awaji expansion to arrive at some point this year. However, a recent leak teased a new Assassin’s Creed game was possibly in the works, that’s not thought to be either of the previously announced titles, Jade and Hexe.
Ubisoft Reportedly Threatened to Sue Assassin's Creed 4 Edward Kenway Actor
The actor who brought Edward Kenway to life in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag seems to reveal that he's been threatened with a lawsuit by Ubisoft.
Posted on Reddit by OminousG, a screenshot of the Legendary Assassin’s statues from Assassin’s Creed 2 was shared on the game’s subreddit, and the user wondered what games could have transpired from this scene. Desmond left a lasting legacy in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, and fans haven’t forgiven Ubisoft for abandoning his storyline or failing to make Assassin’s Creed 3 follow Desmond in the modern day.
Assassin's Creed Fans Mourn the End of Desmond's Story
Desmond stepped down as protagonist in the Assassin’s Creed franchise to allow Ubisoft to structure the franchise as more of an anthology, but the gaming community still wonders what could have evolved from the modern-day plot line. Another Redditor noted in the thread that it felt like Ubisoft was afraid of risking such a large departure from the original formula, and therefore, decided to play it safe instead of what made sense narratively, which some believe “doomed the franchise.”
There’s plenty to look forward to in the Assassin’s Creed series, and previous theories teased Desmond could impact Hexe’s narrative despite taking a backseat in the franchise. However, the community is still frustrated by how much the early games promised to impact future titles and the evolving story, and some fans agree that Ubisoft’s creative direction started to get old around Unity’s release in 2014, noting that the more recent games are vastly different story and gameplay-wise from their beloved predecessors.
