The newest entrant in the Game of Thrones universe, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, boasts a plethora of odd, quirky, and evil Targaryens, out of which stands out more than most: a dragon dreamer and vile monster bearing the Targaryen brand of madness, and a personality that could give Joffrey Baratheon a run for his money.

Aerion Targaryen does things purely for show, cries out loud over the simplest of slights, and isn’t much of a fighter. He exists in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for reasons, most of which place him on par with Daemon Targaryen. Bearing immense shock value, this vain Targaryen has stirred events into motion, for the better.

It's Game Over for Team Green in New House of the Dragon Season 3 Trailer

The new House of the Dragon Season 3 trailer features multiple scenes that can only be the Fall of King's Landing signalling the end for Team Green.

Aerion Targaryen Is The Perfect Daemon Replacement

Maekar’s second son, Aerion, also known as Aerion the Monstrous, has captured viewers’ attention from the get-go. He relishes the Targaryen name and rarely gets along with anyone. A friend to nobody, Aerion is a loner and someone who seeks to capitalize on the Targaryen name and bend everyone to his will.

Aerion self-styles himself as Aerion Brightflame. He treats the smallfolk like dirt, and in his very first scene, expects Duncan the Tall to tend to his stead, bring him wine and female company. When Duncan objects each time, making it clear that he is neither a stable boy nor a steward but a knight, Aerion mocks his station.

Aerion is just as haughty as his ancestor, Daemon Targaryen. The difference, however, is that he isn’t nearly half as talented as Daemon. Though both Aerion and Daemon believe themselves to be superior to everyone else, the difference, once again, is that Daemon can swing a sword, compete in jousts, and fight fairly. Aerion also lacks skills. From what A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has shown thus far, he can only inflict harm on the innocent and the weak, as seen in his treatment of the puppeteer girl, Tanselle Too-Tall.

Dunk in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 5
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Just Dropped the Greatest Battle in Game of Thrones History

Move over Battle of the Bastards, the Game of Thrones franchise has a new best battle episode after A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 5.

Aerion is noble by blood but not by character, lacking the valor and substance that defined Aegon the Conqueror, Jaehaerys I, and Viserys I. While Daemon prides himself on his heritage and can fly a dragon to prove it, Aerion possesses only the former. He is nothing except his Targaryen name, and, at the same time, everything because of it. He rarely treats anyone with courtesy, lacks both civility and manners, expecting the noble lords of the realm to fetch him things.

His petulance is on full display as he cracks nuts while the court convenes to hear Ser Duncan the Tall’s plea in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 4 "Seven." Another trait he shares with Daemon is an absolute disregard for courtly decorum and convention. That said, Daemon knows when and how to conduct himself before a lord, and will put on a false display when required; Aerion does not. He belongs to the latter generation of Targaryens, the ones that undoubtedly led to the weakening of their House.

Aerion and Daemon thrive on shock value, using cruelty and spectacle to assert dominance. To them, everyone in the realm is second to their House, and while Daemon has proven himself to be talented, most notably at Bloodstone, Aerion isn’t even an ideal presence at court. He takes offense at Tanselle’s puppet show of the slaying of a dragon and proceeds to assault her. When Ser Duncan intervenes to save Tanselle, throwing a punch and landing a kick, Aerion demands his head. Aerion also deems Tanselle’s puppetry “high treason” and “a veiled attack on House Targaryen, an incitement to revolt.”

At court, Aerion cowers behind an ancient judicial combat brought to Westeros by the Andals. He refuses a Trial by Combat, knowing he cannot face Ser Duncan the Tall alone, and demands a Trial by Seven instead. The same night, Prince Aegon/ Egg and Daeron the Drunken let Duncan know that Aerion can be “quite the monster.” Egg also reveals that Aerion would creep into his chambers at night and threaten him with castration,

And he threw my cat in the well, too. He says he didn’t but he did… He thinks he is dragon in human form. That is why he was so wroth at the puppet show.

Aerion and his six champions fought and lost against Ser Duncan and his complement of seven in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. His beatdown was as well deserved and cathartic as Jon Snow defeating Ramsay Bolton in Game of Thrones. The only main difference between Aerion and Daemon is that Daemon won't go down without a fight in House of the Dragon.
