Summary

  • Fans are hoping for a behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of Arcane Season 2.
  • Season 1 received Arcane: Bridging the Rift, but creator Christian Linke says budget constraints hampered plans for this in S2.
  • Netflix offers a short behind-the-scenes series titled Arcane Afterglow.

Arcane’s second and final season has ended, and fans are hungering for more content from the world of the Netflix series. Recently Arcane’s co-creator Christian Linke addressed whether the second season might receive a behind-the-scenes documentary.

Arcane is an adaptation of Riot Games’ League of Legends, artfully animated by Fortiche Productions. The series’ dynamic storytelling and cutting-edge animation led to almost universal praise with 100% scores on Rotten Tomatoes across its two seasons. The series was a risk for Riot to invest in, particularly with the series racking up a $250 million budget, but the risk paid off and resulted in one of the most revered animated video game adaptations ever.

Will Arcane S2 Receive a Behind-the-Scenes Documentary?

The first season of Arcane was accompanied by a behind-the-scenes documentary series on YouTube titled Arcane: Bridging the Rift. The series spanned five 30-minute episodes and provided unique insights into the creation of Arcane, including how Fortiche pulled off its complex and unique animation style. Now that season 2 of Arcane is out in the world, many fans have been hoping the new season would receive a similar ‘making of’ documentary. When asked whether this might be in store, Christian Linke provided a disappointing update on X saying “I don’t think so. Didn’t have the budget to do another one.”

Linke added that a second behind-the-scenes documentary series was difficult to push for when the first wasn’t a success. “These things are hard to push for. When it’s a success, people go ‘yeah I mean makes total sense to create a BTS.’ When it’s not a success, it’s ‘you spent money on WHAT?! You self-indulgent muppet,” he said in a follow-up comment. Arcane: Bridging the Rift was released for free on Riot’s League of Legends YouTube channel, and while the company wouldn’t have received any financial returns like it would have with a licensing deal, each episode garnered almost a million views a piece, which speaks to the fan appetite for this type of content.

Netflix Has Released A Short Making of Video for Arcane Season 2

While not an official making of, Netflix did commission a special after-show for Arcane Season 2 titled Arcane Afterglow. Each short episode featured cast members like Ella Purnell, Hailee Steinfeld, and Reed Shannon answering burning questions from each Arcane Season 2 episode with creators Linke and Alex Yee also providing insight. Netflix also released a 10-minute Making Arcane video on YouTube which provides some behind-the-scenes moments of how the newest season came to life and has gained over a million views in under a week. Without an official Bridging the Rift sequel coming out, these behind-the-scenes tidbits may be all that fans can hope for. Riot is working on other League of Legends animated series. However, they are still early in development and are likely years away from release.

Arcane: League of Legends is streaming on Netflix.
