ARC Raiders developer Embark Studios has just announced plans to issue a whopping 500 free Tokens to players affected by yesterday's server problems. The immensely popular extraction shooter has been riding high since its official launch last week, even suffering a bit from its success: players on both PC and console have experienced a number of matchmaking and other server problems in ARC Raiders in recent days.
This isn't entirely unexpected, and is, in some ways, par for the course when it comes to massively popular multiplayer games. Naturally, the trend can be particularly pronounced in viral games, or games that ostensibly offer something new—descriptions that many would agree apply to ARC Raiders, as well as titles like Helldivers 2, which experienced similar server issues at launch. With ARC Raiders' concurrent player count on Steam swelling to over 350,000 during its launch weekend, it's definitely in conversation with the likes of Helldivers, making its server issues somewhat expected.
To put things into perspective, ARC Raiders' massively successful Server Slam playtest peaked at just under 190,000 concurrent players on PC alone.
ARC Raiders Reminds Me What It Feels Like to Survive, Not Dominate
The initial goings in ARC Raiders are a stark reminder that playing it safe can be the clearest path to victory.
ARC Raiders Gives Away 500 Free Tokens to Players Affected by Server Problems
Expected or not, Embark Studios is attempting to offer consolation in the wake of ARC Raiders' server woes, announcing on Twitter that it will be "sending 500 Raider Tokens to all Raiders who logged in on Sunday." Servers were touch-and-go on Sunday, November 2, but it seems like this 500-Token reward will be sent to anyone who attempted to get into a game. In other words, even those who were relatively unaffected by the connectivity issues will be eligible for this bonus. In its official Discord, ARC Raiders' community management said that the tokens will be rolled out over the course of today (November 3).
Raider Tokens are ARC Raiders' premium currency, akin to V-Bucks in Fortnite. Of course, the very existence of such a resource in a $40 game has drawn criticism, with some accusing Embark Studios of unfair monetization. But for the most part, members of ARC Raiders' community have come to accept the likes of Raider Tokens as a cost of doing business and a staple of the live-service space ARC Raiders has entered.
Whatever one's opinion on Raider Tokens, this 500-Token reward can be put to decent use in-game. 500 Raider Tokens equal $5 USD, and can be redeemed for an assortment of smaller cosmetics, like the Mohawk hairstyle or Buff Rock skin for Scrappy.
