Aqua Teen Hunger Force is getting a second wind. Adult Swim announced the dadaistic series is being brought back for a twelfth season of five episodes.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force is a cult cartoon created by Dave Willis and Matt Maiellaro. The Adult Swim series had its stealth premiere on December 30, 2000, before formally debuting the following year. It was a classic Adult Swim comedy, running for 11 seasons and 139 episodes before ending in 2015. Aqua Teen Hunger Force has had two films, Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters came out in 2007, while Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm premiered on November 8, 2022, and will be released on HBO Max on February 8, 2023.

The Aqua Teen Hunger Force renewal was confirmed in a press release by WarnerMedia, which includes statements from Willis and Maiellaro. “We are thrilled to be making more ‘Aqua Teen Hunger Force’ episodes for a new generation of fans, building upon the most impressive collection of IP ever assembled. Success is optimal and leads to quality,” Willis and Maiellaro said in unison. “Congratulations! You waited just long enough for Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm to be free on the service your parents pay for. I can’t wait for you to discover the project everyone has been talking about, and by everyone, I mean our personal Twitter accounts. There is too much stuff to watch already. Breathe, and focus exclusively on Aqua Teen. Delete everything else.”

A scene featuring characters in Aqua Teen Hunger Force

Before Smiling Friends, Aqua Teen Hunger Force was Adult Swim's resident chaotic trip of a cartoon. The series featured sentient food ostensibly operating as a superhero team (hence the name), though they never actually get around to fighting crime. Their neighbour, Carl (Willis), is a human and frequently has a contentious relationship with the team due to their antics.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force employs negative continuity a la The Simpsons. Characters may die and return in the next episode with no comment or consequence. Master Shake (Dana Snyder), the sentient milkshake, is often the cause of various misfortunes due to his selfish and idiotic nature. Frylock (Carey Means), a box of french fries, serves as the show's voice of reason, while Meatwad (also Willis), a meatball creature, is a childlike and naive member of the household.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force is a certified Adult Swim classic. The series was one of the network's first efforts until Robot Chicken supplanted it in 2019. There's plenty of time to catch up before the new episodes drop, and the series is probably one of the best distillations of what Adult Swim is all about.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force is available on HBO Max.
