Crossplay has been a hot topic in the gaming industry for a hot minute now. While fans and developers alike would like to see crossplay implemented in many games, there are plenty of hurdles developers have to jump over to do so. Recently, developers at Respawn Entertainment have spoken out in favor of crossplay, giving Apex Legends  fans hope.

Crossplay, for the uninitiated, is the ability for players on different platforms to play a game together. So, with crossplay, someone on PlayStation 4 could play with a friend on Xbox One. Restrictions like exclusivity deals and hardware limitations have long kept crossplay from being achievable, but great strides are being made to make crossplay a standard, not an exception.

In a recent interview for Game Informer Apex Legends  developers Dusty Welch and Chad Grenier — general manager and game director, respectively — opened up about Respawn Entertainment's attitude towards crossplay. They spoke about the difficulty of wanting to play Apex Legends together, but being on different systems. To that effect, Welch had this to say:

"I think on crossplay we see it's something that is kind of expected in the industry and is important to a game like ours. Chad and I are obviously big fans of playing our game at work and in our free time -- and we go home on a Friday or weekend and want to play with each other and we're on different systems. On a personal level, yes, we'd love to do that and party up on the weekends. I think it's an important thing to get to."

As Welch alluded to, crossplay is becoming an expectation from fans, especially in the battle royale genre. With news of Apex Legends's  developers wanting to see crossplay just as much, fans might be able to look forward to the feature's implementation soon.

Apex Legends  is currently available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
