Multiplayer shooter games like Apex Legends and Fortnite often feature repetitive and routine gameplay, so the developers usually need to cook up new events and other content to keep their player base engaged. One way to do so is to do crossover events with different forms of media, like movie franchises, comic books, and even other video games. While Fortnite has been at the forefront of such crossovers, it has yet to capitalize on an anime video game collaboration opportunity that Apex Legends can pounce on.
Apex has always been fond of referencing shows and movies in their games. For example, Wattson’s Lightning Spirit cosmetic is a nod to Naruto’s iconic orange jumpsuit. Apex Legends also recently collaborated with Final Fantasy 7 to release character and gun skins based on the game. Players can pick up Cloud’s Buster Sword and Materia hop-ups during the FF7 battle royale takeover and acquire permanent cosmetics based on Final Fantasy’s iconic characters. If Apex Legends wants to continue to engage with more JRPGs, it should collaborate with one of the most beloved franchises in the recent decade: the Persona series.
Apex Legends' Pathfinder Nerf Controversy Explained
Apex Legends' latest update has hit one beloved character with a series of major nerfs, and fans are less than happy about it.
Why the Persona Franchise is a Great Fit for an Apex Legends Crossover
There was speculation around a Persona and Fortnite collaboration back in October 2024. However, nothing has solidly materialized from those rumors just yet. If the ink isn’t dried for this crossover, Apex Legends would be smart to swoop in for a collab for several reasons.
Persona is a Sales Magnet
According to the latest figures, the Persona 5 series (which includes the main and spin-off titles), has sold over 10 million copies as of March 2024. Meanwhile, the whole franchise sold over 22.6 million units of its games as of last year as well. Therefore, it makes sense for Apex to tap into the audience of this series, which ranges in the millions. There are different effective ways to go about this potential collaboration.
Persona’s Phantom Thieves Make for Excellent Character Skins
Persona 5’s Phantom Thieves, the game’s leading ragtag team of dream hoppers, are the logical choice for character cosmetics if the franchise were to collaborate with Apex Legends. This is because they have the most iconic looks in the series, and some existing Apex characters would be great fits for Phantom Thieves-inspired skins.
- Joker - Mirage or Seer: P5’s Joker is all about flair and grand escapes, so Mirage would be the logical choice for him. However, Seer’s silhouette and animations also fit Joker’s elegant and sleek movements in and out of combat.
- Fox - Ash: Both characters use a katana as their main weapon. Plus, Ash is one of the few characters in the Apex Legends roster who can pull off a Kitsune mask effortlessly.
- Skull - Octane or Revenant: Skull’s brazen personality and animations are a perfect fit for the adrenaline junkie Octane. Meanwhile, Ryuji’s skull mask would be a perfect fit for someone like Revenant, who already has a skull design for his face.
- Oracle - Horizon: Horizon already has an iconic JRPG skin with Aerith. However, her jumpsuit and goggles make her a great candidate for Futaba skin, which also features the same aesthetics.
Persona’s Iconic Soundtracks are Great for Music Packs
The Persona franchise is also known for its excellent original soundtrack. It mostly features upbeat jazz, blues, and rock tunes with catchy melodies that are easy to listen to in and out of the game. Tracks like Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There from P5 or I’ll Face Myself from P4G aren’t what players would usually hear in Apex, making them a refreshing reprieve from the usual electronica and sanitized rock instrumentals that most music packs feature.
Mementos and Tartarus are Perfect Inspirations for a BR Takeover
Persona 3’s Tartarus and Persona 5’s Mementos are the dungeons that players explore and gain EXP and useful equipment by fighting monsters and finding chests. These realms would be excellent inspirations for a BR takeover. Players could get iconic consumables like Takemedic or Recov-R to restore their HP or shields or acquire iconic weapons like Joker’s Dagger or Panther’s Whip through crafting or chests.
