Apex Legends Season 20 is coming to an end, but the developers have already given players plenty to look forward to in Season 21, including a new chaotic character to latch onto. Apex Legends has always been known for its diverse character selection and has consistently been recognized as one of the most diverse video games in the industry. The new chaotic character in question is Alter, whose personality shows in both her character design and abilities.
In a recent interview with The Best War Games, Alter's narrative writer Jaclyn Seto discussed her concept and story, explaining that she's obsessed with the "ends of worlds." However, this doesn't mean Apex Legends is diving headfirst into a multiverse-style experience, but there is certainly some form of dimension-play involved in Alter's story. If this didn't sound villainous enough, Alter's design also includes a horn and tails, although they are justification for her abilities and not just for fun.
Alter is as Chaotic as You Think
Alter's story can be confusing, and it's meant to be. Every time Alter is asked who she is, she gives the questioner a different backstory. She'll say she was raised in martial arts, that she seeks vengeance for her deceased parents, or that she was dedicated to the Old Way, which is Bloodhound's backstory, among many others. Seto told The Best War Games that there will be times when players might want to trust her, but ultimately it's a "dicey" decision.
I think there will be times when you'll want to trust her, but whether or not you can is dicey.
Alter's Obsession Explained
At the end of the trailer, Alter reveals what's her main motive: she just wants to be there for the end. That's foreboding and reflective of Alter being the first new villainous Apex Legends character for quite a few seasons. Seto said the team could have made a heroic character with her abilities, but narratively, it was more interesting to have "someone who can instill fear" that players can't escape from. This was the right space for her, Seto added.
You hear this at the end of her trailer, where she's there for the end of the world. She really loves seeing the ends of worlds. That's something you're quickly going to see about her with her voice lines and everything as well. It was really about figuring out why she likes seeing these worlds ending and building the backstory in order to get her there. Of course, like, I can't reveal why she likes the end of worlds and everything like that, but I think you'll find out soon enough.
While Apex Legends already has a diverse character selection, it'll be interesting to see how Alter shakes up the universe that players already know and love.
