The first Unlit Candle Animal Well players can find is just outside of the spawn starting zone, but it's just one of the eight total in the game. To light any Unlit Candles that you come across, you will need to find a Match. This guide explains how this puzzle works, and specifics on how to complete the first one you will run into.

What Does Unlit Candle Do?

When the player is able to light an unlit candle in Animal Well, two things happen. First, the area surrounding the unlit candle will light up, and brighten the room. Second, you will progress the Candle secret.

There are a total of nine unlit candles in Animal Well, and once you find and light all nine, you will get an Achievement. Plus, a unique secret will unlock near the beginning of the game. The Candles don't serve much of any other function than to brighten up the nearby area and contribute to unlocking this secret in a completionist run of the game.

To Light Unlit Candle, Find A Match

As there are nine Animal Well unlit candles, there are also nine Matches that players can find to light each one. The first Candle, and the first Match, can be found in the starting area.

The first unlit candle is a few rooms to the right and north from the spawn point in Animal Well. From room to room, travel right from the initial spawn, then up, then up again to find a Telephone. From here, go all the way right and you should see the unlit candle on top of an unreachable block in a room with a blue enemy that will give chase (and a raising platform).

To get to this candle, lift the platform, and go up into the room above. Then go all the way left to find a secret tunnel that leads to a drop above the candle. Drop down to land on the candle – but you'll need a Match to light it.

To get a match that lights this initial candle, head all the way left from the room, past the Telephone, and past a watery area that the blob can fall into. After getting over the water (with the disc, for example), jump up to reveal a secret path that holds a chest with a Match inside.

This is not the only match, nor the only candle, in the game. There are many more candles to discover in Animal Well, and many more Matches hidden all across the interlinking maps of each colored zone. Keep a look out for chests, and be sure to check every corner for secret entrances, to find every unlit candle and Match in Animal Well.
