While Animal Crossing: New Horizons players can buy a lot of beautiful art from Jolly Redd's Treasure Trawler, they need to be careful, or they may end up bringing home a forgery. Indeed, there are two versions of almost all of the paintings in ACNH, and this guide will detail how players can tell the difference when looking at one painting in particular: the Quaint Painting.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Quaint Painting is based on an artwork called The Milkmaid by Johannes Vermeer. Also known as The Kitchen Maid, this painting was created in the mid-1600s, and it is currently located at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. When trying to determine if the Quaint Painting in ACNH is real or fake, players will need to look at what the woman is pouring from her container.
ACNH Art Guide - How to Tell if Redd's Paintings Are Real or Fake
A familiar face returns with paintings and statues for sale, but which of Redd's artwork is real and which is fake? Find out with our ACNH art guide.
More specifically, if the woman is pouring a large amount of milk, then the Quaint Painting is a forgery. Alternatively, if she is pouring a small amount of milk, then it is the genuine article, and players who are trying to fill up their art galleries in Animal Crossing: New Horizons should snatch it up at once. For those fans who would like a visual, this image highlights the differences between a fake and a real version of ACNH's Quaint Painting:
To note, the Quaint Painting is not the only artwork in Animal Crossing: New Horizons that is based on a painting by Vermeer, as his Girl with a Pearl Earring appears in the game as well. Called the Wistful Painting in ACNH, there is also a fake version of this artwork, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons players will need to look at the shape of the subject's earring if they want to avoid buying a forgery.
That said, there are certainly worse things than buying a fake painting in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, as it is still possible to privately display these forged artworks. However, fans who reference the image above should have no trouble obtaining a real Quaint Painting in ACNH, which will put them one step closer to finishing Blathers' brand-new art exhibition.
