Bug hunting is an important pastime for Animal Crossing: New Horizons that want to complete the bug exhibits of their museums. With the coming of May, this is the final month for the appearances of certain bugs on players' islands.

Summer is approaching for players on the Northern Hemisphere while Winter is encroaching closer for players on the Southern Hemisphere. The coming and going of the bugs in Animal Crossing: New Horizons reflect this change in temperature and season.

Players in the Northern Hemisphere only have one bug they'll be losing after May, and that is the Mole Cricket. This bug cannot be normally seen, only heard. Due to it being acclimated for colder temperatures, this bug will be leaving northern islands in Animal Crossing: New Horizons as soon as spring hits.

Mole crickets sell for 500 bells at Nook's Cranny and can be found all day.

As the weather begins to cool down in the Southern Hemisphere, bugs that prefer the sun's warmth are going to be leaving when June comes around. There are 10 bugs that need to be caught before the end of May and they are:

  • Orchid Mantis - Found from 8 AM to 5 PM
  • Migratory Locust - Found from 8 AM to 7 PM
  • Walking Stick - Found from 4 AM to 8 AM and 5 PM to 7 PM
  • Violin Beetle - Found all day
  • Mantis - Found from 8 AM to 5 PM
  • Long Locust - Found from 8 AM to 7 PM
  • Rice Grasshopper - Found from 8 AM to 7 PM
  • Monarch Butterfly - Found from 4 AM to 5 PM
  • Cricket - Found from 5 PM to 8 AM
  • Flea - Found all day on itchy villagers

Some of these bugs are known to flee upon being approached. Players having trouble catching the more skittish bugs can hold the a button to hold their nets and walk slower as they approach their target. If players do miss out on catching any of these bugs before the month is up, they can get in contact with a player located on the opposite hemisphere to catch bugs on their island instead.

Catching all the bugs will net players the Gold Net. This net is the sturdiest of all the nets and can be used over 200 times before breaking.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons  is available for Nintendo Switch.
