Ever since Animal Crossing: New Horizons' release last March, the game immediately exploded into the gaming scene and has since attracted gamers from all walks of life. Interestingly enough, the game became so popular that an Australian politician encouraged his citizens to play Animal Crossing: New Horizons in an effort to encourage people to stay home and help combat the coronavirus pandemic.

Now, it appears that the game has also captured the interest of a US politician who recently picked up a Nintendo Switch to explore New Horizons. This politician is congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who revealed on Twitter that she got a Nintendo Switch to try out the game. In a tweet sent out by Ocasio-Cortez herself, she revealed that she is visiting random people's islands in New Horizons and is wondering whether she can leave a doodle or a note on their bulletin boards.

In an effort to make it easier for players to interact with the congresswoman, Ocasio-Cortez opened her DM's on Twitter so that people can reach out to her and invite them on their islands in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. According to the representative, this is the first time that she has made herself available on Twitter since the Mark Zuckerberg hearing. Apparently, Ocasio-Cortez's DM's were immediately overwhelmed with requests, causing her to force close the app after experiencing technical difficulties.

Although it appears that congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez is the first politician to openly play Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the game has also captured the interest of several celebrities. In late April, it has been reported that Lord of the Rings actor Elijah Wood is playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons and have also visited the islands of random people. One player reported that after tweeting their turnip prices, Elijah Wood visited their island and was extremely polite.

Of course, given that most people worldwide are stuck at home due to the pandemic, it isn't surprising that celebrities and politicians are joining the Animal Crossing: New Horizons game. Apart from its charming visuals and wholesome gameplay, Animal Crossing: New Horizons  offers players plenty to do such as crafting, bug catching, fishing, and many more. Just recently, reports surfaced that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is now the fastest-selling Switch game. In its end-of-year earnings report, Nintendo revealed that New Horizons sold a whopping 11.77 million copies in its first 11 days, which is definitely an impressive milestone to achieve.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is out now exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
